Hi,
I recently changed the build of my 4.1k ilvl GF from a Conqueror build to a Protector build (just because the common offtank got boring).
While I had no problem getting the aggro of an arbitrary boss as a Conqueror, I cannot always get the aggro as a Protector.
The reason is the exaggerated damage output of the Conqueror (yes, the damage output is too large
).
When I run eToS with a 2.5k OP, the OP will get all the aggro on the final boss (well, he can take it, but I am slightly jealous).
I use Enhanced Mark (+300% threat passive), Enforced Threat (taunt encounter), Knight's Valor (intercepting half of all damage) and Aggravating Strike (taunt at-will).
Additionally a Neverember Guard with 3 x Item of Loyal Defender (+30% threat generation, please tell me if the threat does not transfer to my own character).
There are only 3 things which can boost my threat further as a Protector (tell me if I miss something):
- Feat: Potent Challenge (3/3, 15% more threat). Very tiny bonus, negligible.
- Artifact Power of Offhand: Combat superiority (generates thread on affected targets, don't even know if this works).
- Knight's Challenge in exchange for Into the Fray or another Encounter. Not doable on harder bosses and Fray > all.
I know that the Protector is not common at all, but there must be something that gives the Protector more threat.
A simple "adjustment" would be to
extend Iron Guard, the capstone of the Protector: Generate +x% more threat.
What do you think? It would not affect PVP, would not change/buff Conquerors and it would give the Protector a little more usability.

Pure -> Transcendent Plague Fire weapon enchantment giving 80damge/20 seconds for 500k+ AD is a joke.
plague-fire-weapon-enchant-r11-vs-r12
This is the same on both augments and bonding pets.
And I think wildfirede is correct. Prot OPs have hard taunts (like what you get from enforced threat) built into their tab and a few of their encounters. These force the effected targets to attack the user and ignore all other sources of threat. So if a op spams these hard taunts it is a bit hard to keep the aggro as a gf and no amount of extra threat will matter.
We are searching for slave labor, will pay with food from our farm!
I run the same setup: KV, enforced threat, enhanced mark etc. but ..... a low level paladin can spot easily and take all aggro even dealing 500% less damage than me.
So I am not a tank, maybe more a leader ...
NWO is cryptic about classes and roles
No matter how much threat you give GFs, the companions will end up grabbing the attention of the opponent anyway.
Only a handful of bosses (like Lostmauth) are immune to the companion's taunt, somehow.
For this to be fixed, defender companions would have to be reworked and their taunt should just put them slightly above their master's aggro, and not on top of the list.
Another similar problem comes from GWFs and their Daring Shout, that's a taunt and they don't seem to know it. Again, for this to be solved, the problem lies elsewhere, nothing you can do about it on the GF.
As a protector GF, I don't have any aggro problem when there are no defender companions around, Enhanced Mark + Guarded Assault does most of the job. Then there's always aggravating strike and mark who are at-will taunts anyway.
I'd rather get more (way more) HP, and immunity to combat advantage extra damage (the 25% from Ubiquitous Shield just won't do, should be 100%, but on Protector Tree). That's where I feel the class is lacking, if by some accident I get hit without block up, I'm toast, literally zero room for error =/
Nevertheless, I run too many CN to agree about the written above.
There are some runs with a 3k+ GF , and high damage dps classes involved, and also some runs with my DC only wearing a HP set buffing all time, and I did no taunt at all.
Two times onehittet from boss because of what, Healer aggro?
Maybe the problem was another player maybe a GWF, who "daring shoutet", got onehittet and I was next in the aggrometer, can´t say. The GF tanked the boss all fight long shield up and near all groupmember were onehittet from time to time. That should not happen imho and I never experienced anything compareable running with a Paladin, even a healer specced Paladin can hold aggro better.
I saw some player using shield slam having the offhand feat, wich recharges stamina doing so, but that´s no taunt i guess
For just trash mobs.
I buff with ITF ofcourse, because it's expected from our DPS overlords.
But the ITF speed buff can be used to maneuver and aim Lunge like a shotgun. Don't laugh!
Aim like bowling pins, right for the center, there is no max. Aimed right, you can hit like 10/15 mobs.
With high recovery, you can spam lunge like every 4 seconds. It's got an AoE and DR buff.
After that, I swipe the pack with weapon master's strike once, then drop an initial Enforced Threat that's WMS buffed in the middle. Party just started ya'll.
Then block and Aggravated Assult for more AoE and tide of iron to debuff and build stam, but it's mostly blocking hits to bring AP up (5 points in that feat is recommended), Then Steel supremacy and steel defense then swipe away, right in the middle of the pack of them. Spamming WMS,AA, enforced threat, and maneuvering the Lunge shotgun. Only hold Steel Supremacy for 2 seconds because you can't build more AP while it's active. By this time I'm hoping around swiping and agroing like a coked-out chicken.
I start off with Wheel of Elements:Fire/Earth (depends on party) and Tenser's Disk mount combat power, that fires off 2 mount buffs that add more buffs.
When this party gets started, those mobs wouldn't turn around and look if someone was handing out free cheeseburgers. They'll be all up in your grill. You probably won't even need Knight's Valor most of the time.
Nothing you can do about pets. If the party is smart and the DPS gang up on the 1 or 2 mobs that break away from the agro-rain dance, it's smooth sailing.
The people that are pushing for GF DPS nerfs don't understand that amount of PvE GFs that can actually do DPS are very low and are only able to do this in certain circumstances, like having a GF buffing the DPS GF. Then it skews the data and makes the GF look like DPS beast when if they lost the skill slots to buff themselves, their DPS would be mediocre at best.
