Best melee class for solo PvE... is there a consensus?

For solo play I'd say either GWF or TR. TR has some crazy, fun abilities. Dazing mobs and sub-bosses is a blast. Lashing Blade has to be one of my favorite encounters of ANY class, not just TR.

GWF is king of the hill right now for sheer dps though. Even after the Lostmauth set nerf the majority of PUGs and Heroic Herald Dragon runs I'm in it's the GWFs that are on top. Higher than SW (unless SW is wearing the archaic Fabled set), definitely higher than CW (which ticks off a lot of CW since most CWs believe that as a fellow Striker clas they should be at least on par with GWF), higher than HR and higher than TR. 99% of the time I'm in a PUG or Guild runs it's the GWF who gets the Paingiver title. A lot of time they've killed 2-3 mobs before the rest of the party can catch up simply because they have that awesome shift-key-zoom. Fast refill of Determination lets them pop Unstoppable quite regularly too which is another boost to their already high native dps-ing ability. And I say that as someone with 2 reasonably well geared (over 3K IL on DC, 2.5K on CW) mains - CW and DC.

Just for sheer fun factor though I'd say TR should definitely be looked into. They may not have the high dps of a GWF but wow are they a fun class. If I'd known how fun the class was when I first entered the game there's a good chance a TR would be my main now. I'd encourage people to give the class a chance - especially for solo play.

For a companion some good ones I found:

Shadow Demon - for some odd reason this companion does much more damage than any other companion available. I'm suspicious it's a bug but it's been left alone and the Devs know it does high damage so maybe it's working as intended. Anyway...the damage is enough it'd be nearly like having another player in your party.

Selhanine Moonbow - which despite her name is actually a TR companion. She can daze enemies for 4 seconds, debuffs the mobs 1% per her level and buffs your crit % .5 per her level. So by the time she's Legendary that's like 20% buff to your crit and even higher debuff for the mobs - including any boss you go up against.

Renegade Evoker - slot him and anytime a mob crit hits you you'll send out an extra 2500 or so of fire damage in a 360 radius at purple level (green and blue aren't bad either). This is no small thing if your goal is to play Melee. Extra damage reflected back at every mob that's surrounded you without you having to press a key. Yes, please. :)

For me, rough order of 'power' and/or ease of use. All at roughly the same gear levels (~2.4-2.5k):
-Destroyer GWF - even after LM set nerf, it still bulldozes through content w/ the proper setup.
-Justice/Prot OP - can actually get decent AoE dps and control. Not as strong in overall dmg, but it does depend on the encounters ur using and setting up Divine Judgement w/ proper dmg buffs/debuffs for burst. Pretty much can't die as long as Templar's Wrath is on ur bar, so the easy solution to 'low dps' as an OP is to just pull moar. Pull rooms- hell, pull entire lairs at once and have fun.
-Conq GF - good before the at-will buffs, now even better. Takes a bit more finesse and more power-switching than a GWF to be optimal for all cases, but Conq GFs can def solo stuff quickly. Too bad people still want you to tank and/or run full buff/debuff utility in groups..
-Exec TR - strong burst, but just can't clear AoE content that well compared to other classes, as its too reliant on encounters and stealth setups for AoE, imo. Still, TRs ain't bad at all- though Smoke Bomb helps w/ soloing quite a bit. Also played Scoundrel and it was fine, but I found that I didn't really need the extra CC as I got more gear and could just focus more on a 'killing is the best CC' mentality.
-Combat HR - terrible single-target dps (like, sub-Pally levels, and that's w/ using R4 Plant Growth), but good at survival w/ AotLW slotted, and can hit in an AoE rapidly to spread around stuff like Plaguefire. Decent burst dps in AoE w/ the right encounters, but Combat could def use more dmg overall, imo (that or more group utility- its prob the most useless spec for PvE grouping atm).

Also have a Sentinel GWF, cause.. I'm dumb. For real- its pretty good at taking hits and AoEing, but dps is very 'meh' for being of the same class as Destroyers, and even when using Hidden Daggers. Wish it had more group utility to offer than Marks and making everyone around it annoyed at Living Wall's sound effect. Not hard to play, but also not recommended for solo when ya have so much more dps available as a Destroyer.

I also have a close-range/melee SW, if that counts? Prob not :p but he's pretty fun and effective (better than the Combat HR, at least). Has a quite harder time at lower gear levels, though (ie. the norm for SWs).

I get that most/all classes can solo up decently well. What would you all say is the top soloer, in terms of ability to solo the highest level content or toughest bosses? Also, what class has the most sought-after group buffs once you get to the end-game?

If I were going to play a GWF with another player teaming up with me, what would be my partners best option as a buffer/healer/support?

im new and cant open my own thread, but anyways I like to play tabletop 5th edition D&D thats really why im here, so my question is can the cleric here be offensive at all and be pretty effective at it? for solo, group pve and pvp?

Also does this have any of the D&D 5th edition rules to it at all?

My high iL WkSco... can solo any mini dungeon with great ease. Yes, even Biggrin's, Cult Prison and Drake Pens.
He has duo'd through eToS with and HR & a GWF. I end up having to wipe during Syn... due to my partner dying... lol.
Looking to do it with a DPS OP... and Tabatha. Near future...
When his iL was lower, 2.5 to 3 range, he could solo everything but BT, CP AND DP... and he needed a full party to play.

It all depends on where you put your time and effort.

Atwil, is definitely not as squishy as the hiding MI Sab.

So, to sum up this thread and answer the original question:

There is no "best" melee class in PvE because it's all totally relative to the player's own interpretation of "best" and as such, no, there is no consensus.
