High end rigs and Neverwinter... unplayable?

rivodus07rivodus07 Member Posts: 53 Arc User
Question for the people running high end gaming desktops or laptops especially people running EVGA 980gtx ti sc+ or above on Windows 10, Is Neverwinter playable for you? is the game CRASHING DURING COMBAT? or crashing to desktop at any point? Me personally I can play the game at max settings, I can go anywhere I want in the game but if start fighting a mob or even a training dummy the game crashes to desktop with the cryptic error message.

Yet my windows 10 gaming laptop with a high end Nvidia card inside works fine no crashes..

Right now they are having some serious issues. It's not just high end or low end machines that are having problems.

I think that I am in a unique position on this because just last week I went from playing Neverwinter on a 5 1/2 year old system to a brand spanking new computer that was built basically to run high end computer games. I bought it for Fallout 4.

I had the same issues with the low end system and this high end system. Horrible lag, disconnects, etc. It's usually been during peak times.

I had my ISP at my home for 4 hours today, checking everything from my connection from the computer to the router, all the way to the hub, and everything is well within working parameters there.

I was hoping the hardware work they did today would fix it. But no, it did not.

My guess is that you live on the east coast, and are having these issues later at night when playing. At least, that's when I am having them.

The only thing I can think of is that there has to be a bad hub between us on the east coast and the Neverwinter US servers.

    Thanks for the comment Ogarious

I myself have recently brought a new skylake gaming pc for Fallout 4 just like you. I've been haveing a blast playing all the latest games.

I don't live in the states though I live in the UK. I must admit that most complaints I see on Neverwinter is connection issues I see it everywhere on the forums.. The thing is I never have any conection issues at all.. I'm not sure if this is a problem with the US isp's.. most of my guild members are from the US and they always complain about conection issues yet the guys that live in the EU seem to be ok.

But my problem isn't a connection problem it's either a hardware problem or the game is poorly optimised for high end rigs? Mabye my Evga gtx 980 ti sc + stock overclock is makeing the game unstable? I don't know.. Iv'e even tried underclocking it lol.

I have been in touch with tec support and I have tried so many things to get my issue sorted.. it's to long to even post what I've done to fix the issue you name it I've done it.

I just rebuilt my system and since I knew a few other people who have played this, I decide to reinstall it. I can play for awhile just fine. Then suddenly I get graphical bugs that I don't happen in any other games and then NWO crashes after a variable amount of time.

My new system runs a I5-6600k, 16 GB of DDR4 2400 ram, Asus Z170-A motherboard, and a MSI Radeon R9 390 graphics card. All on Win 10 with the latest drivers for everything.

Hmm I run skylake i7 6700k with 16gb of ddr 4 3000 ram and the same motherbored as you with an evga 980gtx ti sc+

defiantly something going on here what the hell could it be?

The funny thing is Cryptic want new streamers for Neverwinter... I have the set up all ready just sitting here doing nothing because of this dam bug!

Hi, I'm quite new to never winter and I am having kind of a similar problem but its really odd because it looks like its frame rate issues rather then lag. Considering what I have in my pc it shouldn't have any issues. I put a list of everything relevant. I tried running the game in highest and lowest settings but the lag is still there. It seems to be more present in the town/more crowded areas. Also the graphics settings had almost no effect on the lag it stays the same for the most part. I can't think of anything, hopefully someone has better ideas.

NOTE: Since everyone here has skylake/DDR4 could it be that there is a problem with never winter and skylake/DDR4 just a random thought since my friend's pc is running the game fine even though it isn't that great.

    Thanks!

Not getting lag here running a smooth 60fps, I know it sounds crazy but while in game press escape go to the edit hud or rearrange hud button, (the top button) and where your quest tracker is on the right press the hide button,, that might fix the issue , or it could be something else doing it

Do you have the crash dump file?
I personally think it is a graphic problem that crashes the client.

    I go by memory..

    In \Cryptic Studios\Neverwinter\Live\logs\GameClient there should be a Crash.log
That is a one string report on the crash. If your crash triggers a Cryptic report, you should find something written there.
There should also be a shoutdown.log.
    I would check both.

Ok here is a new test I did today

instead of fighting mobs myself I stood by and watched someone else (a random player) fight some mobs right next to me.. and guess what. the game crashed with the Cryptic error message. The game dose not crash at any other time but in combat or watching someone in combat.

I have done some looking around the internet and this problem is actually worse then I thought.. this (BUG) has been around for a long time, people were complaining about it back in 2013 and 2014 on Windows 7 and nobody has a fix for this bug at all to my knowledge. I count my lucky stars this issue dose not effect my laptop.

I will try for a few more days to try and sort this out then I'm done.. If this has been going on for the last 2 years I don't think the devs will be fixing this any time soon.

The report doesn't say anything interesting. That message can be translated as "the handler told the GUI to quit"
Maybe you can check what is happening in the combat log when you have the crash.

Well it's more interesting then my results. I don't have any log files even though eventually and at random Neverwinter crashes. The error handler that is supposed to send data back on a crash fails afterwards and hangs in a way that looks like it's still working, but even given hours it never does anything...

I could do sure strike, heroic strike or throw my daggers it doesn't matter, a hunter could walk up next to me and fire his bow and start hitting random mobs (that is when I cringe) "any second now" and BAM booted to desktop in a split second (cryptic error) sometimes I'm lucky and can kills 4 sets of mobs before it crashes,

And you see any damage written in the combatlog?
Because my theory is that as soon as those nice big numbers starts to pop up, you crash.

I forgot to ask. Have you tried a completely clean installation? With register clean etc?

Yep all my logs are working fine I do crit 100% of the time so I do see allot of numbers on the screen and the log.

And I did a full reinstall I even cleaned out the registry so there was no traces of Neverwinter on my computer, and installed arc and did everything clean.. Still crash when in combat

so no relationship between the crash and a particular event, like a specific cast or a damage over a certain number?

Nope.. it could a random mob in the Stonghold or a mob in Dread ring I have tested most zones and the numbers I see are so many I cant track them all lol. I'm surprised there have not been more people commenting on this issue I have to be a unique case I guess.. every other game works on my system I have hundreds of games old and new, but Neverwinter has this combat problem :(

There is one last thing I have not tested.. the game was on my main hard drive which is one of those new super-fast M2 ones

I'm going to install it on my 2 TB ssd hybrid hard drive and see what happens.. I will test it tomorrow that is the only thing I can think of at this point

try settting to a lower res or windowed mode, and see what happens, i had wierd issues untill i did so, it may be related to draw calls.

OK switching hard drives did NOT work I put the game on a clean Drive and the same results happen crash on combat.. now it did take about 10 minuets for it to happen this time...

Well I have no idea what to do.. I think I've tried everything.

I am more and more convinced that the crash is connected to a specific CPU operation. And I believe it is the card CPU.

To check what I was saying before (numbers and damage) you have to take the combat log, check what is happening at the same time when the crash occurs (not visually in game, on the log itself).
Basically, you go on the crash log and you check what is the time (down to msec) then you go on the combatlog and check among the latest lines what is happening around that time.

And just to recap, this is all you tried, right? (see list below)

    - different resolution, window/full screen
    - different DirectX (9 and 11)
    - different settings for graphic (did you actually checked every single option with a turnon/off testing approach?)
    - clean installation
    - clean installation on different drive

Feel free to add, so we can keep it updated

Ok lets see all of the list

    - different resolution, window/full screen = Yes
    - different DirectX (9 and 11) = Yes
    - different settings for graphic (did you actually checked every single option with a turnon/off testing approach?) = Yes (took a long time
    - clean installation = Yes
    - clean installation on different drive = Yes
    - safe mode = Yes (crash in combat)

As for the logs in game there isn't enough time to even see them because when the crash happens it's (Instant) straight to desktop. the only other logs I know are the crash logs in the Neverwinter file but they are useless.

There is one thing I have not tried yet it just came into my head... my cpu is overclocked from 4.0 ghz to 4.4 I can load up the default profile and see what happens...

    Yup, I would try that.
Did you overclock the graphic card too?

No the Gpu is stocked overclocked... that was another thing that I think it is... I did try to underclock it and I was successful but the game crashed on startup when I did that.

    Moreover, an additional test.

Have you tried attacking a dummy?

Yeah I've seen that article. The thing is my GF just finished playing Mad max game took her 55 + hours Ultra settings 60fps, and I've finished MGS5 Ultra settings and not once did we see any graphical glitches or crashes at all.. So performance wise the card is playing games perfectly. and yes Dummys do make the game crash, it may take a little longer but it still happens.

Honestly, for a different problem, i have done lot of testing for resolving the issues that i got, nothing works at the moment, right now (after latest patch and or nvidia driver, latest ) the game has huge fps drop on some rigs (especially high end ) and or crash but everything is related to the ENGINE.
Maybe you will find what is causing the issue but keep in mind that for me after many tries, is a never related problem that needs to be fixed ASAP by cryptic.
If i downscale the resolution in the ingame options, from 1.00 to 0.30 my fps stay the same, something is wrong in here, before the latest patch with 0.30 downscale i was having 250 fps (course).

PS: The optimization in this game hasn't been so perfect but at least was playable at 45-55 frame in open world, right now on multiple pc that i got i have huge FPS drop by 15-20 fps. Maybe not for everyone but for a large part yes ( my friend that plays with me too).

    OS: Windows 10
    RAM: 32 GB
    GPU: 980 ti sli x2
    CPU: 5960x

    BEST LUCK
