why is HIV censored in game? serious question

was in a zone and someone for some reason decided to randomly type hiv and its censored?? we just wanna know why serious post

    OMG! HIV is spread electronically. MY PC needs a condom!

    Seriously though. That is weird. What's the worst that could happen?

    The devs probably obtained their prohibited word list from another source, which is conservative in what it considers offensive, so as to meet the initial requirements for the rating that they wanted the game to have.

    latin "with" is censored, greek "equal" = latin "human/man",...

    ...must've been a bible belt elementary school safe filter.


    Testing: evolution... ...climate change...

    Well, it only censors urogenital, sexual, and fecal words. So maybe not.


    Edit: in chat you can disable the filters. If there's an option for the forum, I'd be happy to learn - always enlightening from a psycholgical viewpoint to see what people use as abuse...

    I'm sure that's something naughty in binary.

    Certain letter/word combinations can resemble sensitive or swear words close enough they are just automatically included just in case somebody is trying to type a word to be offensive on purpose. Try typing the word for "a new player" sometime in it's many forms.

    The blocked word list is kinda crazy. I once tried to use initials for 'Storm Spell' and it was blocked because.... HAMSTER? In 2015????

    Out of curiosity ... is there a list of these banned words from the game? not categories or generalities, but an actual comprehensive list somewhere?

    Yes. It's forbidden in Germany and several other European countries, and excessive use can lead to a game getting banned (The original Wolfenstein, e.g). After all, we've just had one more judicial process against some old guy who had, in his youth, been an Ausschwitz guardsman, so it's not completely without merit.

    All those words on 1st line ARE NOT PC, the ones in the 3rd line ARE PC.

    Maybe because HIV does not exist in Forgotten Realms and allowing talk of it would break people from immersion. ;)

    the funny thing is, censoring all that stuff is the stupidest thing you can do for 2 reasons.

    1) you risk repeating the past due to ignorance

    2) You are better off making fun of it and satirizing it. Im sure Hitler would love nothing more than for us to show respect and fear for him by never mentioning him. Better off you make fun of him like in the Hitler memes on you-tube.

    thank for all the replys, i was in a zone an some guy was like wtf they censored hiv, and the whole channel was mind boggled i said i would head to the forums and ask;;; my guess was same as a bunch of urs, when aids/hiv came out there was a witch hunt on HAMSTER ppl so im thinking sense back then that word was only associated with them, they did it to be PC

    The banned words on NW are weak. It is very easy to bypass by misspelling and still get the meaning across.

    Another MMO I played had amazing censoring (due to young players). Even misspelled versions were blocked. I remember trying all sorts of combinations . . . :)

    I wanted to name my Yeti the Tibetan word for "man-bear". That was not allowed:
    Michê (Tibetan: མི་དྲེད་, Wylie: mi dred, ZYPY: Michê) translates as "man-bear".

    So I can't use Michê for my companion, but there are several characters I've seen named ANALSLUT (yes, in ALL CAPS).


    Edited to add: wow.. that's not even censored in the forum.. lol There are a lot of kids who are going to get an education.. lol

    A year ago, before they removed some stuff from the censored list, Tibet, tien anmen and 1989 were censored too. Didn't check since then. So it's easy to figure out who gave them that list. :)

    Yeah, I've noticed if two swear words are written without a space in between them it doesn't get blocked. I think an AssKiller was running around GG the other day ...

    The profanity filter is something else. :confused:

    While you're IMHO in principle right there, these filters prevent (at least German, but also some international) neofascists from a) using the ingame chat for agitation and communication, b) don't risk getting censored (due to a)), and c) At least in Germany the laws are in place since 1949 (or 1945, set up by the Allies), just so far no one saw the real need to abolish them...

    Like others have said, HIV is probably in the word list to prevent using it as an insult to others. (people with HIV are still heavely stigmatized and lots of people use it as an insult.)
    I personally feel that censoring is dumb, it all depends on the context, but again it's their game and there are always other ways to write those words.
