Being the overly analytical meganerd that I am... I've done the math behind it all, and under no circumstances at all is it a good idea to open lockboxes. Sure you might get lucky, but your chances at getting something good from the keys versus having AD equivalent to the amount zen you would have spent to get that lucky drop? Your best bet is just to buy what you want with AD. Let the wallet warriors pay for your goodies man :)

    How to do the math:
Look at ADX's current AD to Zen exchange rate. Multiply that number by the cost of one key. The result is the amount of AD you'll need to get from that lockbox's contents in order to just break even. Now also factor in your chances at getting something good (going to skip the specifics but I'll say that having taken college level probability and statistics can set you in the right direction) which can be theorized by consulting this link here and you'll soon realize that you're going to lose an average of 10k AD per lockbox for a very low chance (0.4%) at getting anything worthwhile.

Under no circumstances at all is it a good idea to open lockboxes... if you're only opening them to get one of the big prizes.

You're quite right that it's cheaper to just use AD to buy the prize outright, but it might be worth opening them if you're just looking to get whatever. If you'll be happy with a few enchants, a couple of profession assets or some companion runes, then it's not such a obviously bad deal.
When we were at 100-130ad per zen I was spending AD on keys: I got a few neat things, like a blue leadership worker, two blue alchemy workers, a bunch of rare components, some enchants... and of course, the Dragon Scales and Trade Bars. Of course I got a lot of HAMSTER too - but I either sold off stuff I didn't want, or threw it in the guild bank for the rest of my guildies to use.

But yeah, if you want the big prize, head to the auction house and buy it there.

IMO, the best things in the lockboxes (or gamble boxes, as I call them) are the companion, profession, artifact, and enchantment kits. Oh, how I wish I could buy those directly. The fact the current Call to Arms event has a refinement resource kit you can purchase is wonderful, and I'm taking full advantage of that!
