Did I set my expectations too high?

Greetings everyone!

So, almost 2 years ago I made a GF for the purpose of tanking PVE and hating everything about it. The threat mechanic back then was trash. When I tank in an MMO I am looking for WoW styles tanking. Aggro everything and meatshield while it gets killed. Fast forward to now and BAM! Paladin gets released and it is looking good for my aspirations as a tank. Tons of threat, massive DR% and shields on top of shields on top of shields.

So here I am, level 70, decent gear (Alliance blues and purples), 116k unbuffed HP, 46% DR while standing still (before buffs) and I get 2 shot by trash mobs with, theoretically, 106% (or higher) DR, shields from shielding strike and Tab, and Temp HP from Templars Wrath.

So I have realized that I am unfamiliar with how DR% works (with a negation I will be in the 150% DR range, unless there is a cap I don't know about).

The only way to not die instantly on every pull is to have constantly full AP (From DC) and keep Divine Protector up at all times. If DP goes down for too long, dead. If i get a random group with a Paladin healer or a DC who doesn't use the AP regen ability I die constantly.

I will save my rant about Cryptic's failed attempt at difficulty scaling for another thread, what I am looking for is opinions, or Facts, as to why Full Bulwark Protection Paladins can't tank without spamming dailies, and why trash mobs can 2 shot me with all the DR% we have, it is incredibly frustrating to be forced to use a specific group setup to have a decent dungeon run while anything else is nothing short of miserable.

    What are your feats, normal encounters, normal features and dailies? We might have a better idea of how to help you out if we know what we have to work with.

    Mythic gear and rank 12's is not the answer, cause as it stands mitigation in general is broken. Even beyond that, mobs just plain hit to **** hard. BTW socialcommie, you can string DP and Heroism that helps you sustain longer, but that all changes tommorrow, and you mine as well shelve your paladin.

    Not sure about whats your setup, I'm doing fine with paladin on 3 healing feats and the rest on justice for dps bump up.
    We could help you more if you are able to provide more information on which paragon path and feats you have chosen.

    Baby, you're useless unless you get all your artifact gear/artifacts refined to mythic. And that is exactly what cryptic intends for you to do...aka, chaka ching baby, chaka ching

    my buddy has 4 mythics, all r12s and he gets 1shot.... do you even play the game?

    With the servers down I will give a general sense of what is going on with my setup.

    For feats I went for very little damage and as much tankiness as possible. Full bulwark with 2 feats in Light for increased heals.

    Dailies: Heroism/Divine Protector
    Features: Truth/Protection (was running dmg/threat features until I saw how fast i get wrecked)
    Encounters: Templars Wrath, Smite/Divine Touch, Blinding Light/Relentless Avenger
    At-Wills: Shielding Strike/Radiant Strike

    Most of the time I have a ranged class pull now, since I get wrecked when I face pull.

    32 AC
    116,000 HP
    11,500 Defense (when standing still)
    4600+ power (16,000+ in combat)
    Regen/Deflect both in the 2-3000s

    When standing still I am at 46% DR on my sheet (sometimes, doesn't always show up)
    with Paladin Artifact down its +10%
    with shift key pressed is +60%
    with Aura of Protection its +15%

    (if you calculate by increasing DR BY those numbers instead of ADDING those numbers I am at 107%, but i need to know how DR actually increases to figure out the right number)

    I get a buttload of temp HP from Heroism/TW
    I get damage shields from Shielding Strike, Divine Touch, TAB

    I can and DO get hit for 100k+ damage from some of the weakest mobs in the dungeons. In any other MMO this amount of defensive ability would be frowned upon and I would be ridiculed for not dumping points into offensive ability to help with overall party damage.

    In this game it is hardly enough, and if this level of defensiveness is hardly enough, then even BiS gear with maxed out enchants and artifacts won't be enough to make up for the difference in difficulty.
