You know, even if artifacts can be refined into one another at 100% RP, you'd STILL need to pay out for the marks of potency and greater marks of potency to level to legendary/mythic n whatnot. So it's not like it would be trivial switching things back and forth.

That is very true, but it would make it somewhat less painful than it currently is.

The refining system - gradual progression, one level at a time, with properties that unlock with higher levels - is not a bad idea in itself. What's a bad idea is the way Cryptic is trying to abuse this. They've made refining a miserable experience, just so we'd turn to the Zen Market for a easyer way out.
They will never allow us to keep 100% rp when refining one artefact into another, because that's potential income for them. They want you to be in need of rp all the time. Though I would love to be able to retain my progression when I switch to a new artefact, I don't see Cryptic ever allowing this.

100% is fine. Don't forget you still have to put the GMoPs into them.
Exactly, so you are still losing out even if they are "kind" enough to give us back 100% of the refinement points.

Well, the new artifact essence system actually does let you directly convert, but, only to the lowest level for color. So you won't get 100% trade unless you get to legendary, to convert legendary to legendary.
Or so I've heard, haven't actually done any testing for it myself.

Sounds like that is pretty much what this post is asking for. And perhaps more, since it sounds like you don't have to use regents to upgrade it with either.
I hope they add this for the neck and belt too. All artifact equipment needs this.

Just be cautious. As I understand it, you get a part of the artifact weapon, instead of the artifact weapon itself, so make sure you have all the necessary stuff. Read the directions carefully, etc. Someone on the preview shard tried it out and was like "Waaah no I have no weapon!" because they didn't read how it works carefully.

Well, they are called Cryptic, so they're just living up to their name.
Naw, I mean, it's possibly counterintuitive, but reading the description I was aware of the fact that it's not like you just spontaneously have the new artifact weapon, so I'm not really that sympathetic.

This article is saying that our old legendary weapons will not be salvageable for a legendary amount of essence, but the new legendary weapons will be because of their higher item level. And that it would be a very large waste of RP if you do not wait till a double refinement point weekend to throw your old weapon into your new one. So lame. They keep trying to gouge us with every new module.

the system it self should be scrapped ...the artifact gear should level like a companion, the more you use it the more it is unlocked, the more familiar you become with its secrets. In order to go up category you keep the same refinement marks in place now. get rid of the xp involved in invocation and Professions. the only way to level the artifact would be to actually level your character. Unfortunately in the game's present form that would still be tedious being that there is only 6 dungeons in the game and 4 skirmishes at level 70 (malabog, Lostmauth, Valindra, ECC. EToS, and EWD). Still leveling artifacts would take a long while but actually be more rewarding as in that mythic level belt was on that player for a long time.
I like this idea, one of the smartest alternatives I have seen yet on here for artifact refining.
I may not be considered by most the BEST PVP Warlock on the server but, I am the most HATED amongst them.
