So I am working on a wizard and wanted some opinions on the two paths. I am kinda trying to make more AOE damage type caster but not sure if the Master of Flame path is any good. I don't see many in game so I am unsure.
I've been playing a thaumaturge master of flame for a while now, and it's served me well. Next patch though, with the complete destruction of lifesteal, I'm going to be swapping to renegade for the big healing procs the capstone provides. Spellstorm synergizes a lot better with the renegade path, so that's the paragon choice I'll be taking with our free respec.
Frankly speaking, nothing the MoF has beats the broken OP SSM class features, ranging from guaranteed crits to mega-damage extra damage procs.
The only thing the MoF has over SSM, is when you build up a dedicated DoT monster with it in PvP, in which case you'll be ruining the day for a LOT of the TR players out there... but as a result you give up being the pure damage dealer the CW is, and turn into a support/anti-TR class.
Both are really viable. They just have very different gameplay.
Spell Storm is more about burst damage when MoF is more about doting everything.
I cringe every time I read this because it's not really true. My Renegade build puts out consistent, sustained and substantial DPS.
I think this statement was just a platitude echoed by MoF players to try and justify a perceived difference between the two.
The problem with MoF's right now is that they are pretty reliant on Combustive Action/Swath of Destruction to make it work, which puts them at a disadvantage versus SS who can get a tremendous boost in DPS by slotting Chilling Presence instead.
Don't get me wrong...I loved playing the MoF a couple modules ago when things were a little more even...but with the changes brought to the CW over the last 2 modules, SS unfortunately stands above the MoF right now.

When I say SS is more Bursty than MoF, it's without regard to path. And it's in regard to EOTS class feature.
For MoF, the only feat really mandatory is Crirtical Conflagration. Swath of Destruction is good because of its debuff. Combustive Action is too much tied to Daily, like the mod6 class feature. I think Chilling Presence can be a good choice, especially as Renegade.
So yeah, MoF compared to SS really to much on class feature. I made a few proposition some time ago. It's somewhere here.
But if we look at BiS gear, perfect rotation, etc, maybe SS is better but I don't think it's that much different. At this point, gameplay is more important than anything else.
In the end, the best is to play what you like.
edit :
-> remove Smolder damage increase from Swath of Destruction and increase the damage debuff to compensate.
I have a question, if you don't mind me hijacking this thread (Forum account's still on probation somehow, so I can't make my own).
Why on earth did anyone think it was a good idea to make the control wizard hurr like a berserker when using his paragon at will? I specifically respecced away from Master of Flame because of it, now it turns out Spellstorm Mage does it too!

Channeling mystics powers is actually harder and more challenging that swinging a stupid piece of metal like some troglodyte mouth-breather

But then, I'm a high-pinger, which incapacitates area-targeted spells, and favors enemy-targeted autoaim somewhat...
