I heard a rumor that all current companions will get a free upgrade to the next rank when mod 6 launches. Like white to green, or green to blue and so forth. Is this true? I doubt it, but I figured its worth asking.

    Companions will gain a cap increase of 5 to their max rank for their quality, but their quality itself is not changing.

    This means, your free white quality companion today can reach a max rank of 15, but after mod 6, the max rank for a white companion will be 20.

    Free quality upgrade? Highly doubtful. I believe they want you to pay more to get a chance of pulling a legendary companion out of new lockboxes.
