Yesterday I was grinding Thayan gear near the black dragon spawn when it spawned. I was playing with my back to the dragon so its spawn was completely outside my view/screen. However, as soon as players came to kill it and its hp bar showed on my screen my FPS significantly dropped to the "we're fighting in melassa" effect, even though neither dragon, nor its attackers, nor the skills used on the dragon or by it were in my field of vision.
You weren't seeing it, but the game was still processing all that data. As far as I know, everything that happens everywhere in the zone that you're in is being processed in some way by the game on your end regardless of how close you are to it or if you're looking at it. Otherwise, I'm not sure how demo recording could possibly work the way it does.
