GF Guide

Hello all,
Is there a guide on these forums about how to play a GF? I don't really mean build or gear advice, but mainly advice on how to play and what to do. I checked out some of the stickies but their info seems very outdated. My prayerbot leadershp alt GF just recently prayed his way to lvl 60, and I thought I might try some of the content out and I realized that I really have no idea what I'm doing. The mobs kill me so fast even if I have 3k-4k defense. I have only played DPS classes before so playing a GF is a new experience for me. (I went Iron Vanguard and Tactician tree for my GF.)

Thanks in advance.

Best way to learn is to play .
No guide will help you if you dont play it .

GF is the hardest to play class if you want to be the TRUE tank and not buffbot .
So my advice first try to play outside of KV and buffbot build Tactician tree.

Gues i dont even know 1 how play GF as a tank.
All GFs i see Dwarf 11-14 k GS wearing green arti shild and draconic templar +1 artifact using itf ET and KV as they second skin.
I do but its the hard cash way open your wallet and you will have some fun.

Wanted to say something sarcastic about how underpowered is the class but then I realised you just experienced it by first hand for the first time.

It is all normal to get wiped by mobs, when I was leveling with my gf every single solo dungeon quest was exciting and hard, the artefact recovery took me 5 mins to kill the last boss and a lot of tactics moving and ressing my companion.
With my TR, which I started a lot time later just killed the last boss in 5 sec without being hit or something else.

Nah by the way did you realise, you just gave up any offensive and defensive ability to become a Tactician?
No wonder you might have struggles with surviving with the buffbot paragon path :DDDD

Use fighters recovery as a daily to recover a bit of HP during killing stuff until you don't have around 10% regen from gear.
For encounters and at-wills it must be personar preference, play it how you like it.

Tactician is now a waste of time. Protector is pointless outside of serious PVP. I'd personally advise going with Conqueror.

Against mobs while solo, seeing as your GF is likely poorly geared having been a prayerbot, I'd use the following:

At-wills - Cleave & Threat Rush. Switch out for Crushing Surge if you are fighting a single elite, such as attacking the various dragons.
Passives - Guarded Assault (you will block a lot, so may as well make your attackers pay) and Combat Superiority
Encounters - Frontline Surge, Griffon's (learn your foe and time your Griffon's strikes correctly to prevent elites from dangerous casts and moving around too much) and Lunging Strike.
Dailies - Fighter's Recovery (in tandem with Frontline or Lunging you can go from nearly dead to 100% healed with one attack) and Villain's Menace.

Generally, when approaching a mob, I'd Tab-mark the elite of the mob (if there is one), Lunge into them, then position so you can Frontline the whole mob, then time your Griffon's to keep the elite in order. A well-timed Griffon's can prevent Polar Bears and Yetis from charging, for example. Pay attention to major attacks, which will be telegraphed, and block those, returning a percentage of the damage back, then come out of block and swing away. As a young GF you will need to move around the mob a lot to avoid being overwhelmed by the incoming damage. I recommend to always position yourself to maximise your Frontline, so as to catch as many of the foes as you can. Basically, keep the mobs bundled and shield-walk around them.

    In a party:
    At-wills - Cleave & Threat Rush
Passives - Guarded Assault (you will block a lot, so may as well make your attackers pay) and Shield Talent
Encounters - Into the Fray, Enforced Threat and KV
Dailies - Fighter's Recovery (this plus Enforced Threat will be how you stay alive) and Supremacy of Steel (not as special as it used to be, but watch the lasers fly with KV up and SoS active).

Life as a GF in a party is incredibly tough. DPS will race you to the mobs so be prepared to block at a moments notice. Always maintain Tab-mark on the elite within every mob the party is attacking to maximise the damage dealt to it. Spam the hell out of Into the Fray during fights.
PSA: You don't need to grind Spinward Rise for your Elemental artifact main hand if you have some AD lying around. You can craft it via the Tyranny of Dragon's campaign screen.

Not sure i'd completely agree with you on your points. It's rather a personal opinion that i know not everyone shares, least of all me. Every Path can be made to work sufficiently if you know what you're doing, just that some Paths are specifically better at some things than others.

    Okay that sounds great!
    Daly :Fighter's Recovery

Okay I am unsure how to use this daily. Do I cast it before I encounter a series of mobs? Do I cast it before I land a big blow? Do I cast it when I am near death and need heals? Not sure on the correct timing of this one.

First always mark at least 1 target with you tab then itf daly FLS .
If you are surrounded by many mobs fast realease you block FLS first then ITf + daly .
You have always lung & TR to move faar away from the add swarm, just target some add hou is the farthest object/target .

Sorry for bad eng but this is why i dont write a guide :)

So if you are surrounded by many mobs, you should keep your shield up the whole time?

    Yes and no .
    Let me explain .

When your guard is up you deal dmg from reflect -> from reflect you deal Ligthning dmg(weapon enchant )in the mean time you hit whit agravating strike how deal nice aoe dmg too + Ligthning dmg + proc Black dragon g Each hit do 600 dot dmg and from all dmg you can procc Tene .

After your powers are up you start agan but first mark with tab and TR then you have agan combat advantage itf FLS Menance combo break free from adds with lung or TR . Turn aournd and start agan .
IF you have more then 20 adds on you then replace Lung -to- Enforced.
If you have too low hp then i sugges first break free with TR or lung FR turn back FLS comobo FULL HEALT bar.
If the trash is dead focus on large targets with crushing.s .

In pvp i suggest to change artifact class feature to shild talent and use shild talent istead guarded assault i also change my stat bonus from CA to regeneration .

In owerload slot use some Red dragon and change your weapon enchant to GPF.
    This setup rock in pvp.
The reason i change from PL to GPF and from relect to shild talent is somtimes the chain ligthning proc on somone else all load of Gtene :) funny thing somtimes i kill the wrong target .
And reflect dmg can procc Gtene too on wrong target and somtimes my 7 load proc on different target .

I have played GF since open beta (April 2013). My current build is an hit point-Action Point/regeneration build using the Swordmaster/Conqueror setup.

    How does it work?
    1) Swordmaster trades three very useful Iron Vanguard powers for the Swordmaster Class skill Shield Defense. This is the focus of the Swordmaster choice. Shield Defense provides 5 seconds of immunity to all damage when a daily power is used. With the artifact off-hand, you gain an additional 5 seconds of +10% Defense Resistance as well (if you unlock it as a class power).
    2) To increase your AP gain to pop dailies, increase recovery, select artifacts that build AP gain, slot jewels for AP gain, select boons for AP gain, etc.
    3) Slot Villain's Menace and Fighter's Recovery as your dailies. Pop VM as much as you like. Enjoy the wonderful time where you are 100% immune in PVE to everything (no damage done to you, no control effects). Also VM permits you to build AP, unlike SoS. Do lots of damage and build AP with the Conqueror spec. When the Shield Defense buff wears off, take damage and pop your next daily. On average you can pop a daily in 10 seconds in average sized mobs. On high damage mobs (like Kessel's Retreat), with a high enough AP gain, you can pop VM before the effect expires, becoming super huge GF. The point is damage and CC immunity. With this build, you are immune to all effects of damage and control 50% of the time (if your AP gain is high enough).
    4) For the other 50%, get at least 60k hit points, 10% regen, 45% defense, 15% deflect. You will find yourself standing in the midst of any mob aggroing them to death and not taking any damage.

I almost never use my guard because I dont need to use it.

    Enjoy
