Yeah, I'm going to have to say that pvp is actually one of the most imbalanced things I have ever come across. Should a 20k gs wreck face against a 9k gs? Absolutely. Should that match ever happen? Absolutely not. There's just no competition. It's like asking an amputee if they want a race.
Yes, I think the matchmaking is not producing the wanted results leading to one-sided matches. I'm starting to come around the gearscore being the biggest variable to look at just because there are no other options out there.
There is also a problem of a few guilds running around that would wreck ANY other team (even if its another 5-man premade). Should the devs hardcode their guild names and force these guilds to merely queue against each other? There will be never any good solution for that too.
Sure there is, make gear and enchants that only work in pvp, disable everything else for pvp. Its stuffthatwillneverhappen.txt but you get what you need to "build" your character and then they can actually balance the classes around a gear level everyone has. If I had a 14k gwf I'd be pretty annoyed about intimidation getting nerfed because of guys with rank 10s and all oranges. I'd be more annoyed at the pve tree being hot garbage but that's a different story.
Its kind of funny how the game got this whole thing backwards. Pvp should be an even playing field where everyone can compete to the best of their ability but its like 95% the amount of incredibly expensive gear they have. On the otherhand pve should be gear tiered with higher gear being necessary to even try at higher level stuff but its a total free for all that anybody can complete anything with literally any build and any composition.
Your short post has the most concrete information I have seen on pvp strategy in this game. Its a shame that people who have the know how haven't bothered to write a tutorial of some kind yet. I don't even know how to tell what color my team is for chrissakes! As for map knowledge, forget about it. I haven't stayed alive long enough to have a clue.
When I see the same toons at the campfire every time I get whacked, I know I'm not alone.
In my experience, the community makes the game worthwhile (I'm an old NWN PW module builder, and my world wouldn't have been squat without the players). If you want the pvp community to grow, help out the new people. Give us a comprehensive strategy guide so we aren't going to our slaughter completely unarmed, and everyone can have more fun with this.
Alright, back to my daily humiliation for AD...
I am happy to have helped. Maybe someone can write up the tutorial and beg to have it stickied. I was a long long time nwn player also on the Path of Ascension Higher Grounds PW. A better game than this to be sure, but it is wayyy dated now and really nothing has come along quite like it. I like NW for the combat, so pvp is really my favorite thing here.
