GF - Any Reason to go anything but Tactician? [PVE]

Just curious if there is any compelling reason to take any other path than Tactician?

Something along the lines of --> http://nwcalc.com/gf?b=pa7:1dsn28:20e01s,13j352i:1u5000:100000:1zu501&h=0&p=ivn

As we all know.. the extra DPS of Conqueror is never going to complete with DPS classes (and we don't need the DPS for threat)..

We don't need to be Uber tanky.. as I've not run into anything in PVE that needs the extra damage avoidance or mitigation.

GF role is Buffer (Into the Fray) + Controller (Mark + Threat) since MOD 4 and now into MOD5.

Maybe.. Tiamat is going to hit like a... well GOD of Dragons.. and a 60k HPs full Protection GF will be needed..

Just wanted to double check there isn't something out there I'm missing... :p

Thanks in advance.

ITF already takes 75% of your own dr and turns that into a damage buff with itf at rank 3.

At the end of the day, each build can be viable to some degree depending on your play style and what role you would like to take.

For example, I have a Conqueror build that is 'tanky' that is fully capable of tanking end content PVE. He's definitely not bad at PVP, yet lacks the viability and utility of a Protector in PVP unless he uses KV+ItF which, if he does, he's not as good as a Protector.

I've found my Protector GF to be awesome at both PVP and PVE, yet there is not much else to do with that build other than be a buff-bot meat shield; which he does really well.

My Tactician is good for PVE yet struggles a bit in PVP as the only viable play style again is the ItF+KV combo and, although he might be as good at using it as a Conqueror, he's not as good as a Protector. In PVE, again a Protector has greater survivability from my perspective and the debuff works a treat.

This doesn't mean that any build is wrong or unusable (as @isuuk2 has clearly demonstrated with his Conqueror build) but currently there are some serious party benefits from playing certain builds with certain rotations.

I recommend finding a style and build that suits you and that you enjoy and playing that. Whatever it is, you can make it work enough to play it.

As a full Protector Tank I really enjoy in what I am doing and Perform well in Groups and sometimes I'll trow in a little Joke (especially with GWF players) and all have some fun with a smooth run.

I can only speak for this build and must say that not only the build is a good one, but tuned up to the max and awarenes of surroundings are important... These two things is the key for a succesfull dungeon run.
Yes, I hit like a lady with this build, but controll and buff capabillity combined with KV and being able to absorb insane amounts of damage makes a Protector Tank a wanted member in groups these day's.. especially with mob's who tend to hit like a truck.

I have tried to do PvP but its nothing for me to have endless long fights due my DPS is low, so on a point i just stopped fighting and let them win.
I can only speak for myself as Protector tank due it fits perfectly in my way of playing.. but do not know much about the other builds.

Think about what you want to do and to achieve and then choose your build which fit's you personally and you will be ok.

I've played my GF as conqueror most of the time because I simply cannot stomach a protector in solo play, and tactician turned sour after they nerfed the capstone. As previously stated in the thread any spec can tank all the content currently in the game, given decent or better gear so it's all about personal preference.
I've always prefered being able to sustain myself through lifesteal mechanics and respectable damage over hiding behind a shield not putting a dent in what's outside of my bubble. Admittedly, power creep through constantly improving gear is what puts us GFs in the position of being able to eat the cake and still have it. Perchance the buffed WoD dragons will hurt too much for me to be able to tank them with knight's challenge, enhanced mark, the (for conquerors) excellent iron warrior and crushing surge.

Your build is about combat advantage and longer control. If you like it you should stay with it.

If I want be versatile GF, i take 2 feats from protector - Plate Agility (5% deflection) and Shield Defense (5AC to base AC).

    That leaves 4 Tactician feats.

    1st feat – Fight On.
2nd, 3rd - to give maximum benefits to party – Daunting Challenge and Inspiring Leader.
4th feat – Crushing Pin - more personal dps in solo or Surging Tide - better protection as a tank.

I actually have Fight On, Crush Pin, Inspiring Leader and Terrifying Menace in addition of two Protector feats i said above - temporary setup for dailies!

Group support Tactician GF is Fight On/ Daunting Challenge/Inspiring Leader/Surging Tide to me.

My opinion on Protector tree from PVE pov:

Iron Guard works when you hit target with melee, great both for single one and multiple npc. Speaking of single target - its advantage over Surging Tide is just 10%. Brawling feat is another really simple solid 5%. These two feats give you 15% more protection over Tact path with 2 feats of Protector when tanking single npc. When you tanking multiple adds (should you?) Protector has strong advantage when use cleave or wms at-wills. But that is where path-specific tanky difference ends.

Tactician - tanking adds is bad idea and you have to take 15% damage more from single target but your party members take 10% less damage with Daunting Challenge feat. Not sure do you get original 50% or only debuffed 45% damage with KV.

Two last feat in Protector tree have not much common with passive tankyness. They up DPS of GF. Two defensive feats - Shield Master and Armor of Bahamut - i used Armor of Bahamut before M4, now its behavior is unclear to me.I believe they are nice to have, but not essential. Can't say anything about Paragon-specific feat.

Honestly, after playing with several GFs and playing mine, the SM/Tact build is the way to go. GF main role is to a) buff and b) facetank the big things. Tanking outside of a situation where a) it's not ESOT/ELOL and b) There are NO CWS around, is simply not necessary.

Example, yesterday tried SP on my GF with no CW, which was admittedly fun and I felt i had to play tanking for a while? it was kinda fun? But at the same time i could bring in my CW and solo everything so it's not needed.

I have a Conq because I like to feel like i'm smashing things. I know it's not the best build and I can tell that it's not the best build, but I WANT TO SMASH THINGS.

IMO the conq nerf was a little too much, and they lag behind the other two paths significantly. Protector is probably good if team is undergeared and really needs the defense, but for most tactician is best.

just my two cents. Like the class and think it's fun, but wish our other encounters were half as useful as ITF/KV for team play.
