I just hit level 60 a few days ago. Shopped around in the auction house for some bargains and managed to get my toon to around 14k gear score. Focused mostly on defensive stuff. Now I'm trying to do various solo quests like dread ring, Sharandar and Well of Dragons but having a lot of problems. I have a level 60 hunter by the way with roughly the same quality gear and the difference is huge.
The GF takes a much longer time to kill anything, which I understand being a defensive oriented class with a defensive oriented build, but the GF also has a lot more problems. I have no way to dodge out of the way, I have very few AE's, I have no ranged DPS. All of that adds up to having to do a lot more work for a lot more time and still incurring a large risk.
In other games, I'm used to tanks taking longer to kill, but the balance was a lower risk and complexity. Here I seem to have the worst of all worlds.
I've read up on a few builds but they seemed out of date. In one case the armor set recommended had been changed and in another the feats / powers recommended had been changed.
I don't PVP much so I'm primarily looking for advice on PVE. If there's a good build out there, please let me know.
Also, one other question:
I've grouped while wearing the ToD augments that give refining stones and didn't get any. Is it really the person who gets the killing shot that has a chance of getting those? If so, it sounds like I may as well not slot those while grouping.
For dps use lunging strike with anvil of doom and then the other can be your choice, if your swordmaster then enforced threat with the steel blitz class feature can be a good combo.
Use with that combat superiority and the daily villains menace.
And btw Draconic is a very good pve set if you can afford it.
That's the thing with gf though. We are different since our dps isn't no where near as good as most other classes. For dungeon runs and end game content a gf should be defensive and able to use buff skills effectively (Knights valor and into the frey) also being able to survive well to keep the team alive by gaining aggro. The issue is that its very boring playing defensive for solo play and makes pvp hard so its really just a choice of what you want to play and what build will best suit you.
You could go for more balanced build with high dps but then instead of just relying on your high survivability you would need to use skill more to stay alive and maybe use pots more often.
Short answer - you are doing sth wrong. Dont know what type of GF you have but I was leveling my Conqueror before the big GF changes were even on Preview and I had zero issue with solo DR or Shar or anything. Big Fomorian warriors fell in seconds. I ran solo PVE with LS, KC and either Anvil or Frontline. Used KC on stonger mobs and boss critters, erverything else fell to Frontline and Cleave. After the GF change we got a super block, very powerful Crushing Surge and overall very solid damage boost with the Conq capstone. If you went Protector, built fully defensive and are having issues taking stuff down then you pretty much sealed your own deal.
My suggestion - copy to preview and spec a Conq, play around a bit and see how you like it. Focus on power/crit/armpen as you get plenty of defence already not to mention a shield. Deflect is awesome but hard to get for a balanced lower GS build. Once you get to higher GS you can be a Protector again as your overall power level will be enough for the solo "endgame" content.
Row, row, row your boat, Gently down the stream.

Hi.
You did not told us your path tree. Are you tactician,a conq or a protector?
14k gs gear score is adequate but it needs to be focused on spesific stats.i mean in some cases you have to sacrifice some stat categories.
Your first and top priority is to reach your Resistance Ignored to 24%.that means Arm pen number % ,plus your dex bonus. The total sum should be 24% at all costs for pve.
Second top priority, you must at least have 2500-3000 power. That is roughly 15-17% bonus damage.
In defence slots in all your gear put radiants.Radiant R5s will do.Hunt powries in sharandar and you will make a lot out of rank4.they drop all over the place.
You must make a choice between regen and life steal. In very high gs GFs,they can afford both. You cannot cause of relatively low gs.So pick one of two.I would go for regen personally.
Basically that's it.Try to fill the other stats as you see fit your gameplay style. But don't spead your stats.i mean if you have low deflect ,don't choose a piece of gear that gives deflect.Try to max your stats that you already have invested.
Do not invest heavily in defence.Anything above 44-46% is good.In pve you will not understand in difference.Defence has hard diminishing returns.
Crixus that answered above has a very good build. He has a link in his signature, try this out.It is a good build and is not outdated.
As for rotation,if you are IV ,go Lunging,FLS,Griffons or replace Griffons with Anvil.KC is another otion.
If you are Sm go Lunging, and then Flourish/or griffons and AoD in which order you like.
Lunging is a must cause is a gap closer but also a very good dps.Does relatively low damage but has a very short cooldawn. In 10-12 secs you can do 2 Lunging and surpass in total damage ,other encounters that have higher damage but far lower cooldawn.
I forgot the att wills:Use Crushing surge (must) and the second is your choise. If you are Iv ,you can use TR or Tide.I would go for tide cause it gives +20% damge to all at wills and encounters .Tr gives just a mark i think.i am not IV sorry
If you are SM,go for Crushing and your second is again tide.In dungeons you can change your tide with WMS.Just to hold aggro. In dungeons you cannot make any significant damage anyway.(with all dps running around).
Use your mark always.the tab.it gives you -20% Dr.In pve cause adds do not have DR,game makes this to a flat out +20% damage.Aslo Mark gives CA,combat advantage. That is another +15% damage.
As for companions try to farm the blink dog and buy the renegade evoker. Both are cheap anyway.Evoker active bonus is to make damage to enemies whenever you get critically hit by adds.this is quite often and does not have ICD.
Blink dog gives x 2% damage to ca.So your CA will be around 17% plus.
For solo content gear sets:if you are on a budget go for the cheap and always good Valiant. For dungeons Knight captain. If you are rich go for solo timeless.
Unless you are going to play your GF as a dps char with focusing on offensive stats and gear and choosing Tactician or Conqueror paths it will of course take longer to solo fights. However a GF played as a tank isn't meant to be about killing stuff fast but more about being able to fight take more on and survive it due to high defenses and the ability to block.
You could consider using skills like Knights Challenge for the dmg boost on tough targets, along with skills like Bull Rush and Griffins Wrath and dont forget your daily skills.
My GF is a Swordmaster so doesn't have access to much multi-target skills outside of Lunging Strike and certain daily skills like SoS. Iron Vanguards though I would suggest using Frontline Surge. Also as just mentioned Supremacy of Steel is a good daily to use when fighting several enemies for the reflect damage and then ending it early for the area damage.
For gobs of mobs FLS, ET, LS is my bread and butter. Use Villians Menace whenever your AP bar is full unless you are actually getting hurt more than you can fix then use Fighters Recovery. Some areas (specifically IWD) have a few, tough moibs then go to LS, GW, KB. use your tab to mark and assassinate them one at a time. The thing is our most basic gear somes with a pile of defensive stats. So feel free to go all-in on offense because there is not much oin solo play that can actually hurt you. Oh and use Combat Superiority for the love of Goddess. It is 20% on whoever hits you and everyone should be hitting you.....
I want to thank everyone for their input, I am in the same situation as our original poster. I just hit 60 and now I feel terribly out classed by everything. I'm doing a Conq/tank attempt mostly based on the Rokuthy’s Hybrid Tanking Build (I will post the link to the build I based on). I think my biggest problem was/is gear. I have the Knight's Captain set as I play with a group of friends and it seemed to be the best boost to the party. Okay now for the real question I want to ask, if I wanted to respec to be better to my group as either a full tank or as a tactician will soloing still be an option, I don't mind not killing things fast but I want to be able to get through dailies and such.
There's a lot of very good suggestions above. Great response from the community. Everyone has a few quirks that they like, some like the buff bot & run with groups all the time, others like the conq style & roflstomp through things with some scratches for character
Really though, GF probably isn't your thing. You might not like it, but it can be a very frustrating class or a very rewarding class (mostly dependent on your outlook). Love my GF, enjoy playing some dps classes for a change of pace, but it's not everyone's cup of tea.
If you have another character slot available, try running an SW for awhile. That might give you a little more what you're looking for. I'd hate to say "delete your tank", because you've spent some time on it & I can appreciate your valor at trying something new. This just might not be a good class for you.
