Is there any real purpose to gold?

I can't really figure out what I'm supposed to use it for. I get lots of potion drops from farming dailies, so don't need to buy those.

Everything else I want to buy cost AD.

Is there something I'm missing here?

    Its main uses are for buying potions and skill kits.

    Or you can foolishly trade gold in-game with someone for some items, but I would not recommend it. My experience has been that anyone who trades decent items for gold is going to hack your account. It happened to me the ONE AND ONLY time I ever traded gold in-game (for a Dragon Egg). Be wary!

    It is good for potions and kits and professions items.
    There are many dailies and boons tasks that require it in the modules.
    It is needed for swapping out enchantments and such which can get quite expensive on high tier gear, especially if you share that one favorite perfect enchant amongst many characters.

    Be careful what you wish for. If they add things that require gold, then it may not always be there when you do actually need it. It might be best if they just leave it alone.

    Maybe if I bribe Lostmauth with some gold, he'll give me a boon book

    Injury kits if you're running dungeons.

    Swapping enchants - I have 3 normal Dragon's Hoard enchantments (well, I have 4, but I keep one in somebody's artifact belt), so I switch the enchants from alt to alt as I run dailies. For 7.5 gold for each full swap I get about 20-30k refinement points per alt.

    Injury kits. Depends on your class but a squishy class like say the gwf will die once per fight. While in solo you can just wait 3 min at campfire, in a skirmish or dungeon it's ulikely that your party will wait for you for three minutes each time you encounter a group of foes.

    How on earth would someone hack your account because they trade with you???:) Tinfoil hate ftw....

    Don't ask me, but I have seen several threads started here about being hacked and each person claimed to have good anti-spyware. One of them also mentioned having traded with a stranger a bit prior to the hack.

    Like I said, I have only been hacked once on one of my accounts (and I have 4 accounts), and it was shortly after trading in-game, gold for a Dragon Egg. When I logged in, all of my toons were standing near the mail courier in PE - they had all been in DR last time I logged. All gold and AD were gone.

    this actually should be possible, Lostmauth was bribed to destroy the city so if players pay him twice as much he should be convinced to go after that rogue mage instead
