Professions & Getting all 9 slots.

So far, I am up to 7 slots in my daily professions window. Its been fun, and hard work , but I have Leatherworking at 20 , Leadership at 19 (almost there) and will start on a third profession shortly to get another 20 and that final slot.

However the current dilemma I have is : What is the cheapest way to get a 100% quality item to get the profession slot.

I already have 2 Grandmaster Leatherworkers, which gives me 100% speed bonus (for the 7th slot), but to get a 100% quality item, it looks like I need at LEAST 2 or more Mithral Awl/Knife/Shears , which are 400k apiece on AH.

Is this the best way to go about getting that 100% quality item? Is there a really good professions guide kicking around on the forums that I missed?

No, you haven't missed anything, you are correct, you cannot make use of those professions for profit unless you have significant investments. Just get your slots and once you have them, run leadership 24/7 and forget about the "crafts", they are a lame excuse for a craft's system.

If you're going to do this for multiple characters make sure to get different crafts on each so you CAN craft with dragon eggs if need be.

Because of the Artifact Weapons....all the professions (except the awesome Leadership and maybe Alchemy, thought it is very hard to level)...are 99%..err, well 90% worthless...
Right now professions give us 2 useful things:
    - stat kits
    - pants and shirt

The rest is just trash. Weaponsmithing, Artificing used to be useful professions because you could craft powerful weapons with them. But now everyone will be forced to use Weapon Artifact.

I really hope they will not adds more "artifact equipment"...it all ends up to te grind/moneysucking.

I won't proclaim how you should do it, that's up to you. But here's how I do it:

I use Alchemy, I have three Purple Alchemists and three purple mortars and one plain mortar (that you buy from the Professions vendor).

The moment I am able to use multiple assets on a task I will use all three Purple Alchemists to get the "100% Speed) slot unlocked. Then I look for the daily "rare" tasks that usually start reliably at level 3 in Alchemy: I go for crafting a potion and use the three purple mortars at my additional assets, this bumps change of obtaining 10 potions up to 65% or so (as opposed to only 4 or 2) - once I craft the ten potions it unlocks the "Tier Three Result" slot.

Then I mail all this assets to my next alt; rinse and repeat.

I "cheated" and just bought the purple assets in the Auction House. best investment I've made.

I wouldnt say buying from the AH is cheating. I spend hours every day grinding and selling stuff on AH to get enough AD to buy the stuff I use to advance my professions. It just takes time, and with the random nature of Profession Booster packs, I am not investing the few thousand Zen I managed to swop in the exchange for a "Chance" of a Purple item.

I did find that from when I did buy Zen previously, the profession items I received were mainly Green or Blue Alchemy items, so I think once Leadership hits 20, I will follow that suggestion and go down the Alchemy route.

But, I will have to invest the 800k in Mithral Shears to get the 100% quality bonus through Leatherworking, since as you guys say above, most of the crafting skills do seem pretty worthless. I levelled LW because being a TR, I figured I would need the armor when I hit 60, only to discover that there was almost nothing of worth there.

Ah well. Lesson learned. Thanks for the feedback.

    But on a final note

What is actually still profitable from the Crafting system, since nothing I make seems to sell for less than the cost of its component parts?

What they should have done/do is add level 60 green and blue weapons to weaponsmithing and artificing. At least then you could perhaps choose to craft refining items for you artifact weapon.

The other option would of course have been a better system that didn't revolve around refining in the first place. Would it have been so bad if the artifact weapon leveled off XP. They could still sell (artifact) XP boosts to suck money out of people.

On topic. I went with alchemy for the 100% quality bonus. Assets were cheap, I bought them of the AH and shared them around my characters.

Crafting doesn't seem to be profitable, unless someone knows a secret . . .

And I am perfectly happy to have 8 slots available. The AD I would spend to acquire the means for that 9th slot would not be worth the lack of AD accumulation.

Crafting is definitely profitable. It is how I made my fortune crafting many, many pairs of pants.

Now that purple tools are less than half of what they were, the glory days are back.

Pretty much what Vortican says. I personally want all epics (4x 40% and at least 1 Epic worker) for every profession possible and actually have this also except need 1 Epic Needle to have 160% for tailoring to make shirt/pants for CW's.

Buying epic assets (hammer, shears, awl etc.) that work on multiple professions is your best option.. There sure things where you can make enough profit on... but telling this will cost me my sells and so AD ^^

Doesn't a lot of stuff (like gemmed) require a Dragon Egg? Have those gotten cheaper than they used to be?

I bought yesterday a Dragon Egg for 35k on the AH, sure that was lucky but having patience and check the AH many times to find some cheap stuff can really pay off. Currently i seeing that the Dragon Eggs cost around 40~50k.. so everything what you can sell for at least 110k AD can give a nice profit (I always take average of 2 Dragon Eggs to make 1 Tier 3, I use 4 epics to have 60% chance for Tier 3 result). Also you can just sell the Tier 2 result, if this sells for 50~60k AD.. ( ;) ) means you can only make a profit since you can buy a Dragon Egg of the AD you gain of selling that Tier 2.

Since the market always changes, especially if a new class comes out... I decided to invest in every profession. Seeing the current prices which are very low because of the current Lockbox dropping "Profession Special Pack"... you can earn each epic asset back in 2~3 Gemmed gear you sell...

Ok. Thanks for the info. I haven't really had the time to invest in crafting very much . . .

I think I have about 2k Zen kicking around. Might convert back to AD and then buy 2 Epic Mithral Shears.
