I am not that good at fighting but have gotten into IWD but can't do the epic HE's and the harder quests. They both have NPCs at 62/63. Is the problem my low GS or just poor playing skills? My folks are about 12k GS, 3 different classes so it has to be general advice not re-spec-ing help.
Lots of those HE's require multiple players. The smaller HE's like raiding barbarians or wagon attacks can be solo'd but depends on your class, gear and skill. When you go by a HE, it will give you the recommended amount of players. Don't expect to solo most of them, either ask for other players to join, wait until other players arrive or try swapping maps by leaving the area and coming back.

Are you trying to solo the 5-6 man ones? Its not going to happen at 12.5k. My GWF/CW can do some, but not all of them easily.
The area is harder, I brought my hr as soon as I could at 12.5k and I had to skirt around alot and eat some pots, but all the quests were soloable even then.
I would say at the lowest gear scores DC/GF will probably be the worst, CW/GWF really no issues and then tr/hr doable but not as easy as the CW/GWF.
brought my GWF as soon as he was 12.5 as well.. frankly didnt skip a beat.
Without knowing your setups/gears ect, it will be kind of hard. I went in with at least a t1 pvp set as minimum, as that is how I level anyways. Its better then most blue equipment set ups.
But again , I do not know what you have, or what classes.
Each play differently.
Below is probably the graded scale of class difficulty for IWD if you are going in with minimum gear/boons:
1. GF
2. DC
3. HR
4. TR
5. GWF
6. CW
depending on what you have/what spec ect.. some of these can flip flop. Its not set in stone, but if you are trying to DO IWD at minimum GS with 2 or 3 of the hardest classes to bring through it, that could be tough.
You may want to think of at least getting t1 sets to help.
I respecced my HR from Archery to Combat shortly after she got to IWD and found it a lot easier to run the quests that way. Split shot mechanics don't work well for me, but Clear the Ground and a lot of Lifesteal makes you pretty tanky in solo PVE, even against the IWD mobs.
For my GF who was around 12.5k (down from 16k!) when IWD launched, it wasn't hard so much as very very slow. I really really despised the Battlehammer Goods quest when it took me a decent amount of time to clear the mobs and then more spawned when I tried to get the quest object. At least at one point where I managed to grab the object before they aggroed on me, I just ran away until they leashed back to their spawn point. The drawn out fights also made that character most vulnerable to ninjas in the Troll Idol quest.
My other chars were all around 15k. The DC still wasn't a lot of fun. I could dish out a decent amount of damage with DG and DL but I ate a ton of damage as well. The TR did ok, using stealth and smoke to avoid damage. The CW and GWF facerolled everything.
