I am not arguing about anything, just stating changes they are making to the event. And yes, perhaps the drop rate might change too, but we will have to wait and see if it is for the better or worse.
And we know, nothing is really for free.
This whole "nothing is free" thing irks me - there's "free" in the colloquial sense, where something doesn't cost money, and there's "free" in the literal sense, where something doesn't cost *anything* - be it time, effort, etc.
When a business uses the term, they overwhelmingly mean the first definition. When someone tries to call them out on something *not* being free, they are generally using the second definition, and this is where things get all mucked up.
So, no, the event is not "free", since you'd need to have access to a computer that can run the game, an internet connection to access it with, electricity to run said computer & internet, time enough to create an account and actually play, and so on...
If you take the first definition, then yes, the event is free - you don't have to give Cryptic or PWE *any* money ever to take part...
