I'm currently working through the Alchemy Profession but have got stuck because I need a bag of gems. It says something about getting them from booster packs but I can't find where to get booster packs from. I've even tried at jewellery merchants and other merchants but can't find any.
i don't think a bag of gems is required to complete the alchemy profession. a bag of gems is something that will speed along certain crafting tasks in professions, but it shouldn't be required to complete any profession leveling.
perhaps you could post a screenshot of what you're looking at?

I can confirm that the illusive 'Bag of Gems' is not required to progress in alchemy. My HR recently hit level 20 in that profession, and I've never seen that resource.
Oh right. When I saw the task that required the bag of gems, I thought I had to do it so I could progress. I'll have another look and try a different one. Thanks very much.

The tasks that require a bag of gems are basically instant versions of the mass gather tasks.

There is only one way to level alchemy. Experimentation and research. Its not like a traditional profession where you earn xp by simply doing tasks.
You must preform experimentation tasks. Each experimentation will produce an unstable potion, and a chance to get an alchemical knowledge scroll. You might have to experiment several times to get a scroll. Once you have enough knowledge scrolls, you can then do a research task. This represents all your gathered knowledge from all your previous experiments. A completed research task will always advance you to the next skill level.
AND for the curious, because the question was asked but never actually answered: Where can I find this Bag of Gems item?
I had looked for this elusive Bag of Gems previously, when I first noticed the speed-bump they give: it is only acquired (randomly) through the Professions Assets or Professions Resources packs on the Zen Market; which means you can find them in the Auction House. Though I personally feel the prices outweigh the benefit, so I have never used them myself.
They are just a great 'fast-forward' on mass gathering tasks, where what would take 6 hours can be completed in 10 minutes.
