I've noticed throughout my time playing this game that all of the armor is for each specific class. However, during the same time period, as I've looked at the specifics of each armor available that I have seen, most of them are much better for one class but are specified for another.
What I would like to see is the armor being used universally; that is, every class can use every armor. The weapons I can understand, but the armor (especially armor that drops from slain enemies), every class should be able to use the armor.
I think it would be better if you beat a boss and it drops armour fit for the class that killed it. An example would be like the axe dropped from the many arrows orc boss. It could be a bow or knife for HR, an icon or talisman for CW or DC respectively. Better than seeing a wizard in full plate

Much like Diablo 3 works.
Unfortunately I suspect this would reduce grind too much for their tastes.

Simple answer, no.
It has to do with balance.
First of all in Pen and Paper the weapons are not very restricted at all. It is the armor which is.
Wizards wearing plate mail are unlikely to cast any spells due to arcane spell failure (a mechanic which is not in the game) as well as the fact there are numerous prerequisites before you can wear armor. For instance Full Plate requires 17 STR and heavy armor proficiency to use. The prerequisite for Heavy Armor proficiency is Scale Armor which requires 15 STR and Chain Armor Proficiency.
In short for a wizard to wear platemail they actually need to invest about 5 feats into it and would suffer at least 50% spell failure.
And the feats system in the game is nothing like the real feat system. To put it into perspective basically all of your non-paragon feats would be required to wear full plate on a wizard and it would still be a horrible idea.
A bit more realistically GWFs could have the option to wear full plate but this goes right back to the second line: it has to do with balance.
The game is balanced around the limitations imposed. The truth is if it is amazingly good for your class but you can't use it then it is likely intentional. I.E. Trickster Rogues have a number of amazing regeneration options on various rings. Why? Because the options have to be amazing to even be appealing because regeneration is not a particularly good stat for a rogue. So yes Guardian Fighters end up eyeing those items with a deep desire but they are purposely not given to GFs for the sake of game balance.

Also doesnt explain why fighters are not allowed to wear lighter armors/wizard robes. The class specific rings example is a non display item.
I wasted five million AD promoting the Foundry.

Again, it is about balance.
The visuals exist although I can agree there should be more variety for less heavy armor in classes that normally wear heavy armor...
But the ability for classes to wear other classes armor will not exist because the stats given on each class specific item is balanced specifically for that class and would be out of balance for other classes.

Because this is not a D&D simulation. It's an action game loosely based on D&D rules. You can do a LOT more things in pen & paper than you ever could do in any D&D game that exists to date. Certain games enforce rules strictly, other games are just "flavored". Neverwinter is somewhere in between, lore is mostly respected (obvious exceptions apply because it's a MMO), while game rules are heavily modified.

Rangers are not archers btw. They are survivalist fighters.
