I've just gotten my first companion. Will I get others at different levels or do I have to purchase them?

You can purchase more of the White Level companions via gold, otherwise they can be earned through Call to Arms events, buying from the Zen store, or some dungeons drop them at the end (Renegade Evoker from Valindra's Tower for example!)...

    Hope that helps!

You can buy white companions for gold, they are usually cheap (2g each IIRC)

Green companions are usually tied to events (CTA etc.), promotions (there's one active here: http://www.gamespot.com/articles/neverwinter-mystagogue-companion-code-giveaway/1100-6419195/ and another should be still active here: http://www.arcgames.com/en/arc-news/detail/3030473-come-grab-your-free-arc-gifts_ ) or some end-game lairs/dungeons (Valindra's Tower, Celadaine's Tower etc.)
Several green companions are also purchasable off the Auction house for 50-100k (depends on supplies).

Blue companions are rarely free, but you can get a few ingame without spending money (there's one in SCA but it's very hard to get, or you can quite easily buy one with Drake seals you find in epic dungeons). They are often very expensive in the Auction House, to the point where a purple one is usually a better investment.

Purple companions are always, in some way, ZEN bound so you have to either buy ZEN, or buy them on the Auction House. Some of them are relatively cheap (from the end-game point of view) at 300k, others are quite rare in the 2mil range. The best time to buy one is when there is a sale/promotion of some kind or when new lockboxes become available.

Don't forget: You get a free Shepherd Dog (white level) from doing the Swordcoast Adventures Tutorial. You can do it at this web address: http://gateway.playneverwinter.com - login and choose your character (if you have more than one). The first option is to play Swordcoast Adventures (a.k.a. SCA - the same mentioned above) - old-school table-top style dice game. The first adventure is a tutorial and you win a nice little Damarian<sp?> Shepherd Doggie.

Just mentioning it since we're on the subject of freebie companions. Though it's bound to your character, all characters can earn one.

Another method is the epic rank angel companion that you can get by collecting 360 ardent coin (invoke daily 360 times)
