Rust Monster's damage debuff

I've recently noticed something peculiar. Recently my mage was training her Rust Monster and it was her active companion for a few days. During that time her damage in TOS runs was significantly higher than her party mates, even though they usually dealt much more damage than my wizard (they were focused on damage dealing, my wizard is rather balanced). I found it strange, and then I noticed the "Rust" debuff.

I was sure that it was what cause my wizard's sudden damage boost, but then a friend told me that this debuff applies to the damage dealt by enemies, not the other way around.

Now I'm a bit confused. I've read Rust Monster's description and it seems that the debuff applies to the enemy's damage (15% stack max) - which works great for tough bosses like Fulminorax or Valindra, for example. But is it only limited to that?

Does any of you guys have similar experience?

One thing I noticed from the Battle of the bridge CTA using my Rusty Beast was that he was immune to the fire damage. He was biting the bosses ankles and only taking minor physical damage with their AOE's while all the players nearly died. This allowed for the bosses armor to melt away faster and often while the summoner racked up the points. :p

Rust is an active effect, too. You don't need to summon Rust Monster to get this buff. It can be in active companions with Ioun Stone or Cat summoned, which is very nice.
