I need advice on companions

Hi all,

OK so money is an issue for me, otherwise I'd just buy a cat or allure stone.

At the moment I am running with my Stone of Radiance. I was just wondering what the difference is between the allure and radiance stone? Would I receive much benefit in changing to a stone of allure? This is assuming both stones are maxed at rank 30. Or should i just save up for a cat?

Thanks!

There's no need to change from the Ioun Stone of Radiance to anything else. The Stone of Radiance, the Stone of Allure, and the cat all do basically the same thing--give a healthy boost to your stats. The only differences between them are their active companion bonuses and what kind of slots they have for runestones and equipment.

The Ioun stone of Radiance has:

    3x offense runestone slots
    2x Ring slots
    1x Waist slot

The Ioun Stone of Allure has:
    2x offense Runestone slots
    1x defense Runestone slot
    1x ring slot
    1x neck slot
    1x icon slot

    The Cat has:
    2x offense runestone slots
    1x defense runestone slot
    1x neck slot
    1x ring slot
    1x waist slot

Basically, some people prefer the Ioun Stone of Allure because it can be harder to find a good waist item to boost your offense (most belts have HP and a defensive enchantment slot whereas rings have offensive slots). But, practically, the difference is very small. If you're not going for the "glass cannon" build and you actually want better survivability the cat or Stone of Radiance could be preferable.

Also the Stone of Radiance gives the best active bonus of the three boosting your Lifesteal and Deflect. The cat just boosts deflect and the Stone of Allure gives a chance to slow enemies (which is pretty useless).

    Being that I have both...

There isn't much difference between the two once you upgrade the Stone of Radiance to Blue status. The real difference is what you can equip on the Ioun Stone as far as gear.

In the Allure Ioun, you have an Cleric Icon Slot. In the Radiance Ioun, you have a Belt slot. Ironically I used a Purple Gear Icon on the Allure, and I could actually use a very very nice Blue Gear Belt on the Radiance that seriously boosts stats important to Mages.

They both Work very very well.

I recently switched to the Radiance however due to the things I learned in IWD testing with Heroic Encounters. It has to do with the Lifesteal at +105 and Deflect at +105. The encounters in IWD that are HE, hit very very hard. Unlike the stuff in Shar and Dread.

But I only tend to use Iouns for group play anyway because some groups prefer it.

I found that the most beneficial companion for IWD was not the Ioun at all but rather the Acolyte of Kelemvor. Due to the large amount of damage you end up taking in HEs, the Cleric of Kelemvor allows you to Lifesteal it all back in one AoE. Minus this you'll be dead in two rounds of mob attacks, you either kill them quickly. Or you die. And you can't just stand there face tanking them, they're going to kill you if you do that.

Heck they might do it anyway.

Shockingly the encounters in Dwarven Valley are actually weaker than in the Icewind Pass. But... IWD has made me change everything about my gear and companion style and way of playing in PvE.

So what worked before, may not be that effective this time around.

Yeah AoEs never go out of style though...

Sorry for the thread highjack but it appears your question has already been answered, maybe someone can give me some advice as well.

My main is a 17k CW and I am working on maximizing my companions, not just my stone. I am looking for the most effective companions to fill out my roster. I currently use:

    Cave Bear (purple): +1200 HP
Moonshae Druid (purple) +660 HP, +165 Recovery
Wild Hunt Rider (purple) 5% chance on encounter use to increase damage by 10% for 5 seconds.
    Ioun Stone of Radiance (blue)
Not Sure what 5th companion to use.

I have the following companions available: Rust Monster, Lillend, Phorea, Sylph, Sprite (all are purple out of the box), Wererat Thief, Skeletal Dog, Tomb Spider, Ioun Stone of Allure, Orc Wolf, Red Wizard Evoker and Illusionist, Skeleton, Ioun Stone of Might, Fawn, Swashbuckler, Fire Sprite.

I think I want a Fire Archon for the +5% damage to critters below 30% HP, but I am not positive that it is the best use of my last companion slot. I would not say "money is no object" but I do have fairly deep pockets (in game only lol) and should be able to afford most companions if the bonus is worth it.

    Any suggestions are appreciated.

I'd say the stat boosting pets are less worthwhile than the special effects ones... I like the look of the Fire Archon too and the Wild Hunt Rider seems like a no brainer. Might be worth looking at a Blink Dog if you have Nightmare Wizardry, especially if you can upgrade it to Purple.

I'm aiming for a Cantankerous Mage and a Will o Wisp for a CC boost. Once you get past 13 or 14k, damage doesn't really seem to be a problem so a bit more CC seems to be a nice thing to have.

Putting the Buff into Debuff since 2013 \o/ (Does that even make sense)?

In general I agree that stat boosting pets are not always the best choice, but I really REALLY like the +1860 hp that I am getting from the bear and the Druid. Not to mention the 1496 hp from my Stone (ancient belt + rank 8 radiant).

I am still torn between the Archon, the Sprite and maybe the badger or Galeb Dhur.

I'm of the same philosophy. I use the Dire Wolf (from the Guardian Pack) for the 5% chance to interrupt, the Sprite (50% CC resist), the Wisp (25% CC resist +15% Control bonus) and then usually the Panther (from the Hero pack) for the 10% boost in damage to prone targets. Plus my stone of Allure, of course.
