Ladies and Gentlemen, I would like to announce that I have published my latest creation. It's called 'Monty Haul's Farm'. I was just sitting here last night doing a few edits on one of my quests, when suddenly I had an inspiration! I immediately stopped working on my current project and quickly started slapping this one together as fast as I could.... before I lost my muse. Anyways, I have just published this and have not yet played it on a live server....

Would anyone like to go first? Maybe give me your thoughts .. at least tell me if you like it or not?
I would greatly appreciate this very much.

'Monty Haul's Farm'
NW-DQTLZJAJ6

Thank you.

PS... yes, I know, I'm not giving you any idea what this quest is about. Let me just say, I think it's rather ... uh... different. I really don't want to say too much as I don't want to give away anything... please, just give it a quick play. It should run at just over 15 minutes (that's what I'm hoping for). I hope you like it.

Is it actually a farming quest or is that just the name?

Sorry I didn't respond quickly, I spent the evening at my job.

Anyways, to answer your question... yes, I think so... actually, to be fair, I would say that this quest is designed as a parody of a farming quest. Also, I haven't spent too much time with this one (as compared to some of my other works, but maybe I'm just getting faster) so please understand that it's not finished yet. I'm sure there will be some refinements in the near future. This quest was a lot of fun to design and I hope it is well received as I would enjoy creating a few more very much like it. While writing this one I kept having flashes of Douglas Adams (Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy) and Monty Python.

Yeah, It's supposed to be a comedic parody of a pointless farming quest.

Wow... three days, over 100 views... not one play.

This is NOT a farm quest... it's a comedy and an actual adventure.

Well we did have all that downtime yesterday too, so people were reading the forums and couldn't play.

I thought it was one of the better spoof quests!

Playing through now. Sorry I didn't get to it earlier.

1.) The name is "Monty Haul's Farm" but the initial objective says "Monty Hall's Farm".

2.) The animals have numbers in their names.

3.) I'm assuming this is intentional but one of the "heroes" is named "Human Fighter 1" and another is labeled as a Thayan Red Wizard.

4.) The chains were labeled as "Dire Helm Forge Chains 02".

I think all that was on purpose, Orangefiree. I may be wrong.

Yes, I figured there was a good chance it was but thought I would point it out just incase any of it wasn't.

Thanks for playing this quest... I really appreciate it. To answer your questions.. uh.. yes, they were named that way on purpose. I even considered doing some of the stuff I've been reading about (like putting a door with no building around it, etc...) but I decided against it. Actually, I was intending to make this as bad as I could, but I couldn't help it.. it was turning into a real quest after all.

The name should have been the give away... In old school d&d, the term "Monty Haul" was used to denote any adventure where the monsters just rolled over and died, the treasure was HUGE and POWERFUL, and basically, everything was like a a game show with prizes. It was not used as a good term.

    Thanks

Wow. It never ceases to amaze me how some people think. With almost 20 reviews now... almost all 5 star reviews... there in the list sits one 1 star review. The comments? 'nice attempt at humor'. Thanks Elariah. I appreciate your review. Now I need to find every one of your quests and return the favor.

I understand that not everyone has the same opinion of each work... but really? 1 star? Thanks for skunking me.

Also.. I would appreciate the reviews to be a bit more specific... other than 'spelling errors'. If anyone finds any errors.. PLEASE let me know where.

    Thank You.

You're going to intentionally try to spike other peoples' quests for giving you a bad review?
This is the kind of disgusting BS that's ruined Foundry.

No.. that is not what I said. I will give a FAIR review. I have NEVER given a 1 or 2 star review. If I think the quest sucks.. I won't give any review at all. This comment was given more to point out the person that did this to me... not as a threat that I would do this to them (yeah, I know.. it was a threat, I'm sorry). Rest assured that I will never play any of this person's quests at all. When someone publishes a quest that receives almost entirely 4 or 5 star reviews.. that 1 star sticks out like a sore thumb. I also felt confident that I would receive a few 1 star reviews .. from people that were looking for a farming quest... ha ha .. the jokes on them.

@zahinder... do you really believe that it's ok to intentionally bomb someone just to bring down their star rating? Or am I the bad guy? Am I the person perpetrating the disgusting BS?

I'm trying to figure out where your stance is because you are all over the place... 'that is not what I said' 'it was a threat, I'm sorry'.

No, I don't think it's ok to intentionally bomb someone just to bring down their star rating. It's a d*k move. And that's what you threatened to do.

I'm glad you didn't mean it and don't actually do it.

You're absolutely correct... it is a d*k move.. but I guess it's ok for some ying-yang to do it to me. As far as my stance is concerned... the review process sucks. It is more of a competition than a fair review process. I'm not competing with anyone but myself. I try to make the best quests I can.. and I don't care how my quest rates in relation to other quests. But this system is screwed up. It encourages the less mature authors to bomb others just to improve their own ratings. When the 'farm' quests move up to the top of the favorites list, it just shows how flawed this system is. So, I made this quest to spoof this... and a 1 star bomb is my reward. That's cool. As a matter of course, I searched for this handle and was unable to find any post in the forum by this author. It's my guess this is an alternate used just to bomb other authors.... I wonder who it belongs to? Or am I mistaken?

Agreed that the rating system is terrible and prone to griefing.

But... how can you be sure the person is intentionally trying to lower your rating? You know, it's possible the person simply doesn't think it's very good.

Personally when I review any quest, I normally assume it is a work in progress [WIP], because we all know you can go in a fix things such as typos, labels, broken links, etc.. Therefore I never rate or write a review saying that the monster on level 2 is still named generic_monster#5 or complain in the review about spelling and grammar.

What makes for a better review is to grade by what the author is trying to convey in the telling. So when I seldom look at other reviews, I can tell the bad critics from the good critics. For example; Movie critic Roger Ebert said this about the horror movie "Silent Hill":
I had a nice conversation with seven or eight people coming down on the escalator after we all saw "Silent Hill." They wanted me to explain it to them. I said I didn't have a clue.

In this case, when I do find the time to play "Monty Haul's Farm" I hope to find good gags and jokes. In comedy RPG you must have gags that almost anyone can understand as well as the fans of D&D. For example; not everyone is going to get; "You rolled a natural 20 vs charm self and oh my that person in the mirror looks good!" That might get the laughs around a group of table top gamers, but some PC gamers won't grasp it.

Now as for authors, I don't write up a quest and wait around for good reviews. You will always get bad reviews. Roger Ebert gave the movie "Star Wars" a bad review, I recall him calling it a sci-fi remake of the "Wizard of Oz" and telling people they should go watch Woody Allen's "Annie Hall" instead. I am busy hammering out my next quest and I leave the others alone unless I am told about errors by PM. I don't tell authors in the forum issues about their quests in public. Why tell spoilers here? When I do get around to reviewing this quest anything I find will be noted in a PM directed at the author to correct.

These are my personal rules of review etiquette, some may wish to adopt them for themselves.
