After mainly focusing on PvE and gearing up I've decided to hit PvP in order to get a second artifact.
Now, is the GFs place in PvP to sit on the middle node or try and sit on the enemies home node? I'm playing my GF as I did my tank DC; get on the middle, sit there, and frustrate the hell out of people and wait for my party to come and help.
PSA: You don't need to grind Spinward Rise for your Elemental artifact main hand if you have some AD lying around. You can craft it via the Tyranny of Dragon's campaign screen.
As a GF you should never do back cap unless you are good and the other team are bad.
As a GF your job is to cc important target help your team to take them down, also use your cc to protect teammates.
Also GF is a good node holder because Bull Charge.
But do noted you are not as tanky as a DC, as a matter of fact you are actually squishy if you fail to block the big hit or the cc.
A bit advice on build path: Hybrid Conqueror or Tactician. Both are viable but at the same time both has its limit. In your case I would recommend the first one since it is more pug game friendly and good for taking down people in order to carry your team.
You can be tankier than a dc especially if the dc is on your side and a gf is anywhere that needs to be held down not just on the nodes sitting in one spot you must work as a team as a gf to survive and only pvp with people who will help you help them.
DC are only tanky because of thier buffs and passives which they spread amongst thier team.
You as gf are very tanky alone can heal yourself become immune to cc and damage and are able to ragdoll people as good as a gwf you just do not hit quite as hard or always move as fast.
GF can also be used to support not just knock the other guy out and can do both at the same time.

Whatever is thought of will be changing for classes come next PVP patch, if it comes live, DCs will be the weakest class by far, the passives, self heals, mitigations and or temp hit points that made us hard to bring down, will be seriously nerfed. DCs never were really a great DPS class, it was fun to help hold nodes and as others commented a DC , GF combo was pretty nice, as a GF could cover the DC's back with the things they couldnt do well, which was prevent themselves from being CC'd chained into the ground.
What the future of both classes hold in PVP is still kind of unclear, even if you fully spec out DPS mode wise, anybody in the same GS range as yourself with the dps classes is superior. The one thing a DC did well is counter a HR in the same GS range, because their CCs didnt chain you from healing and slapping down a Ashield to mitigate most of the damage. Im used to PVP month of the nerf and buff class thing in other games, but like I was telling others, Ive never seen one class get hit as hard as the DC will be, considering its not even a top tier class to start with. The nerfs were probably meant to balance out the GWF a little, but in reality it hurts the DC the most, since GWFs still going to be a load of pain into the game.
It doesnt help its all arena matching to start with, being a weaker class say in a open world concept where you could really hold points helps, as utility comes into play alot more when you have more then 5 players at once (Ive been in open world maps with hundreds on both sides.
As a GF, you should be where the biggest battle is and help your team nuke targets according to priority. Also your help is invaluable for your team-mates to survive. Sometimes moving your toon on top of your team-mates toon will screw the targeting so much that the damage dealer will feel that he is not doing what he is supposed to.
If a DC is in your team, stay close to him and help him kite damage by peeling opponents of him. GFs are really good in PvP provided they are teamed up with people that know the basics and can understand what they bring in the setup.
i find GF in pvp just as useless as pve. GF dmg is neglectable in pvp - basically you cant kill anything 1v1, you get to charge some enemies and got nothing to follow up with - maybe a slow that every other class can escape from, you prone some enemies sometimes if the are afk statues, your nukes have a ridiculous slow animation and by the time it gets off there is nothing in front of you, you got CCed or knocked back.
oh yeah you can block some nukes partially but that if you are a HAMSTER that likes to be a punching bag while having the mobility of a hippo in a puddle of mud. dont even get me started about pve... my guild is running the high level content with no healers and every other class can tank the same of better than the actual tanking one. and by tanking i ofc mean kiting...

Play with a couple of premades using their GF's... Ant Monster and his group, Lemonaidestand, Exile and the list goes on. GF's are anything but weak (when done right) in PVP.

And if you still wanna make excuses. Here is what goes for you:
Average GF defensive stat: 32-40k HP, 44-50% DR and 17-30% Deflect Chance, also 1400-2100 Regen. That covers most GF you would encounter in PVP.
And we look at DC, those actual good ones not just some wanna be PVP DC: 32k-38k HP, 40-44% DR and 20-28% Deflect chance, regen about 1400-2200.
Compare these two raw data and then plz math prove how GF can out tank a DC. DC still have dodges and doges and dodges.... Astral Shield for extra 20% DR with heal, Exhalation for immune, and don't forget healing word. Daily that gives Temp HP and extra 15%DR
What GF's kit offer? A guard that can be broke easily once being focused or hit by certain encounter/at-will. Daily you only have SOS that offer some extra tankyness for you which is not really effective.
If you are not gonna prove how GF out tank a DC in any case plz don't reply. I honestly don't see how some one can argue on this.

I would have to say the DC currently will definitely out tank the GF if both max geared and in premade PVP. The DC just has way to many buffs as well as dodges and self heals on top of regen. I see it all the time the unkillable DC. A GF can definitely tank if it's a turtle build in a 1 v 1 but it's only a matter of time before it gets burned. ITC rogues are the one's that handle tanks rather well with cc immunity and stacking bleeds while chipping away the shield. You don't see people complaining about the unkillable GF like the unkillable DC because there really isn't an unkillable one. I have used fighter's recovery and I don't think it's very viable in PVP with the amount of defenses characters have you may get a 10-15k heal but is definitely not gonna heal you full unless your using a perfect vorpal and crit or use knights challenge. This is all considering premades. Now pug stopping doesn't count because yes you can tank a ton cause their gear sucks and you may heal a lot due to the daily because they have no defenses.

ah another one of you types that tell everybody else to learn to play. tell me mister awesome pvp-er how exactly do you play GF right in pvp in order to be on par with every other class ? what do you bring individually to the team ? enlighten me i must be a no0b.
Empirically speaking, the most annoying and effective GFs -- from the point of view of those having to fight one -- are those who have the knack for becoming a meatshield for an enemy player you have in your sights.
The ones who are all cocky about their 18k+ gear, run around seeking for individual 1v1 fights and all, these types are easily lured and most usually not much of a threat (provided that you or your teammates have enugh gear-power/skill to survive it).

Now.. the ones that are most friggin' annoying to fight against, are those who have this uncanny positioning who keep stepping into your line of fire against the target you have chosen, who keep knocking you off from the target you are trying to focus, and always force a 2v1 without any concept of 'honor' or '1v1'. Like said, a good meatshield.
Ofcourse, GWFs can also do that, but since GWFs can also run around like how a crazy mutt would chase after cars passing by, just see any target and run straight for it and leave everyone behind, it usually comes down to the GF to become the annoying "anvil" of the team while the team waits for the idiot "hammer" -- GWFs -- to actually come to their senses and cooperate.
In my experience, these GFs who really have a concept of a "team", were the most difficult and annoying to fight against.

I posted before what I think GFs bring to a team. All I got from your response is a huge generalisation on a class just based on your experience. Clearly, you don't have fun with the class, since you mention that they are completely useless in both PvE and PvP. So feel free to jump on something more interesting for you, maybe.

Before module 2 the GF class was beastly in PvP .... Now compared to a GWF its like nothing special
But still if you play it right you can kill every class 1v1, you can do outstanding premade performance and you can provide high support and burst dmg.

But still if you play it right you can kill every class 1v1, you can do outstanding premade performance and you can provide high support and burst dmg.
