Hello GD,
I'm a pretty new player to Neverwinter. Great game so far; I'm playing with a few friends and it's been a very enjoyable experience.
I really enjoy this game - and when I enjoy games, I tend to spend a lot more time than is reasonable on them. However, my group of friends is trying to stay within the same level range, so I can't level up too quickly.
Of course, the reasonable alternative to this is to create a second character, but I don't really feel like doing this yet.
However, I've found two ways to spend my time - Gateway (possibly one of the greatest things ever) and learning the AH.
I've done some small flips up to around 30K AD (which is nothing), but my main problem is with companions. I bought all the defaults and they are all Rank 15 or close to it, and I can't get farther than that; I can only do Tier 3 - occasionally Tier 4 SCAs.
So my main questions are:
- Is it worth it to do any kind of merchanting before level 60?
- Is there any way of getting more companions that I can level up? I realize purple/blues are extremely expensive (Phoera/Ioun stone please) but I don't have the capabilities of getting AD yet. I'm trying to level professions but that takes a lot of time too - working on leadership right now.

Welcome to NW!
I'd start by saying there are some green (lv 20) companions you can get fairly cheap on AH (40-50k AD), but they are not a good investment for a starting character. Keep your AD until you hit 60, and get some cheap purple equip and blue enchantments first.
Once you are set up for epic dungeons, you can start gaining some more serious AD (along with leadership profession) by running dungeons (especially during DD) and performing other tasks (foundry, pvp, gauntlgrym and other stuff).
Also, if you happen to have some spare $, take a look at weekly sales, there is often a companion on sale.
Occasionally you might get some freebies or so by checking if there are any promotional giveaways on this page: http://neverwinter.gamepedia.com/Promotional_Item_Giveaway_Codes , i.e. this one (if it is still active, i'm not sure):
http://www.arcgames.com/en/arc-news/detail/3030473-come-grab-your-free-arc-gifts_
If you install ARC and follow the instructions to redeem the code (fbyjHBUe) you get a free green mage companion account unlock (that means you can redeem it on any current and future characters, so you should definitely get that 2nd character to play when your friends aren't around :P)
IGN has a similar promo http://www.ign.com/prime/promo/neverwinter but you need to subscribe (1 month will do) to IGN Prime, for like 6$ or so you get another green companion as account unlock
Nothing wrong with making a couple alts and leveling them to level 10 at least and start trade skill stuff on them. Leadership will by a consistent cash crop of AD. AD you can buy Zen and with Zen you can buy purple companions and other useful things like an 110 speed mount that is account bound.
At 60 and with the proper exp and gear score, you will be able to get in farming groups for purple gear to sell. Some stuff sells for quite a bit of AD making your playing the AH seem minute in comparison.
Leveling is fun,but basically training for end game content. Learning how to achieve obstacles solo will benefit a player later on.
On a new character I start invoking as soon as I can (level 11) and sell any blue drops and (non-healing) potions that my character find. I also try to do a few lower level skirmishes such as Blacklake and Orc Assault whenever skirmish hour is up to get the extra 1K AD per skirmish. This can bring a surprising amount of AD - I once got around 25K AD this way before level 15 and could have got more but I find running too many skirmishes in a row uninteresting. If you are in a set group though lower level skirmishes are a fun way to get AD during skirmish hour.
At level 60 you only need about 3K AD total to get outfitted in a full set of Blue gear and a green shirt and pants. Put in any rank 4 enchantments you find along the way and you character will be suitably well equipped to run all the Tier 1 dungeons and some of the easier Tier 2s (Temple of the Spider Queen being the obvious exception).
Would you really recommend doing leatherworking (I'm TR) first? I'm at Leadership 7 right now and just spamming the Local Maps quest every 2h. Would Leatherworking to 20 be faster than that? Are there any guides for speedleveling professions or is it just "do what looks like gives the most exp/time"?
ryugasirius, thanks for the wall of text (I read it, it was very helpful). I've also read Trace's AD guide but most of his techniques are for 60s as well. Thanks everyone else also; I might just make my second character and speed it to 11 for the Prayers.
Another question. I'm at 30 right now. Is it worth putting my Celestial coins into the Sharandar chest now, or should I roll for a C. Ward with 7 coins?
For pure speed, nothing beats Alchemy. You will need to spend a bunch of AD on experimentation materials, but it can be done with only 1 profession slot. If you lack AD, go with Leatherworking.
I'd go for the coalescent ward. A sharandar chest might save you a couple days farming a boring quest (eventually you'll get there anyway), but a coalescent ward can save you 150k AD when obtaining your first weapon/armor enchantment.
Getting sharandar boons a few day sooner, or a proper enchantment waaaay sooner than you can normally afford it, might make a huge difference
Anyway, I feel like I should warn you that leatherworking assets are the most expensive ones in the game and you can't make the best stuff without purple assets.
Is it worth leveling Leatherworking to start then? I'm continuing with Leadership for now since I just bought 2 guards.
The Arc promotion companion is great especially as you can claim one for every character you ever make.
The reason people suggest leveling another profession before Leadership is because other professions are much faster to level up, which means you unlock the professions slots much faster.
So it is much better if you want Leadership and another profession to level up the other profession fast. This way you have the most slots available when you start on Leadership.
the companion doesn't show up in the promo tab of the reward claim agent?
Ohh I see! I'll get started on alchemy then.
