Let's say you could create your own companion, using any of the existing powers, spells, or abilities that already exist in-game. They' have to fit in the Controller/Defender/Striker/Leader types we already have, (I'm excluding augments for this discussion).
Name: Control wizard
Type: Controller
Primary attack: magic missile (3rd attack in a row strikes 3 times) - 1 sec cooldown
Secondary attack: entangling force - 10 sec cooldown
Level 30 ability: chaos magic - the control wizard's 3rd magic missile attack has a chance to heal nearby friendly targets for 1% of their max health every second.
Passive: +100 power
Appearance: A female human wizard in a Neverember tabbard.
Name: Dusk Dagger
Type: Striker
Primary attack: cloud of steel - a quick toss of a dagger at range - 2 sec
Secondary attack: shadow strike - a dagger toss that does moderate damage and places the companion into stealth (while in stealth the companion deals double damage) - 15 secs
Level 30 ability: When the Dusk Dagger comes out of stealth, he drops a smoke bomb, which dazes targets for 1 second (max once per 30 secs).
Passive: +3% crit severity
Appearance: A male dark elf cloaked in thief gear, (think Imbross from Rothe valley).
Name: War Steed
Type: defender
Primary attack: stomp - your faithful steed rears back on its hind legs then comes down, dealing damage, (use one of the various PBAoE attacks as a base) - 3 secs
Secondary attack: back kick - your steed rears up on its front legs and gives a powerful kick with its hind legs - moderate damage with a chance to knock back - 8 secs
Level 30 ability: stomp now has a chance to knock targets down
Passive: +55 defense +55 movement
Appearance: Use any of the various armored horses we have as mounts.
Name: Lizardfolk Shaman
Type: leader
Primary attack: virulent bolt - a burst of noxious poison that deals minor damage + a moderate DoT - 2 secs
Secondary attack: healing chant - a PBAoE heal, centered on the shaman, which heals for a moderate amount - 15 secs
Level 30 ability: virulent bolt now slows the target
Passive: +55 regen, +55 recovery
Appearance: A lizardfolk shaman from Pirate's skyhold
Name: Gelatinous cubelet
Type: striker
Primary attack: splash - the gelatinous cubelet splashes itself against the target, dealing minor damage and slightly reducing the target's defense - 3 secs
Secondary attack: engulf - your cubelet attempts to engulf the target, briefly immobilizing them and dealing DoT - 10 secs
Level 30 ability: Delusions of grandeur - your wee little cubelet briefly realizes its full potential, and becomes a full sized gelatinous cube - lasts on a few seconds, and can only occur once per minute - significantly increases the damage of all its attacks
Passive: has a chance to add a small DoT to your attacks
Appearance: a small gelatinous cube
See what you can come up with!

Any ideas I'd have, I'd prefer to keep to myself. =P But I love the concept and give it 36 thumbs up.
I guess it would never happen because of the volume of work it would require, but its a fantastic idea. A drag and drop interface for powers and a costume designer. I'd spend on it.

Well, I'm not saying they actually implement a custom creator in game... I'm just saying we brainstorm for ideas.

They don't have this, but I assume unique, named, companions would work as well.
Name: Vlathis (Unique NPC from my foundry campaign.)
Type: Controller
Primary attack: Arcane blast: Deals damage to all enemies in a cone in front of Vlathis. All enemies hit by arcane blast receive the arcane weakening debuff, causing their defense to be reduced. When dealing damage to enemies enemies with, arcane blast, Vlathis heals equal to the damage dealt and reduces the cooldown of Planar Summoning by one second for each enemy with arcane weakening hit.
Secondary attack: Planar Summoning: Summons a random allied NPC from any of the following; Shadar-kai Gloomblade, legion devil, ash disciple, phase spiderling, or nothic plaguegazer.
Level 30 ability: Archmage's Wrath: Vlathis's arcane blast now reduces the cooldown on Planar Summoning by one second per enemy with arcane weakening hit and her planar summons gain 30% more health and damage.
Active bonus: Your attacks have an chance to activate Arcane Frenzy, granting increased damage and reduced cooldowns.)
Appearance: A young human girl dressed in wizard robes.
Neverwinter players are stubborn things....until you strip them down to bone. (Cursed players, my flowers, MINE!) Oh how I plotted their demise.

Awww. I liked it better when I thought you were suggesting that. heheh..
Well as it is, there is the ioun stone of allure, and then there are other companions who are entirely irrelevant other than whatever their active bonus is (in practical terms, not considering flavor and role playing. -NOT saying these should be neglected.) And that has nothing to do with whether they are Controller/Defender/Striker/Leader, other than the logic of a metal-sheathed juggernaught is likely to lend to defense, etc.
So for non-augment companions, I think only the active bonus is of any value, other than for standing around PE. I use some strikers when doing foundry dailies, and to be honest, it slows me down, but is amusing since they improved the AI.
I do like the creativity of your idea, and hope that some others who are thinking more along your lines will chime in. But I still think it would be something that could benefit players as well as make some money and/or player good-will for cryptic/pwe.
=D
P.s.. It irks me to see my companion (or my companion's clone) running around with 27 other players in the game, in one spot. I mean it really bothers me. That's maybe the main reason I was so interested in this post.

Shadar-kai Assassin.
Type: Striker.
Primary Attack: Shadowfell Stab: Stabs the target, dealing damage. This attack gains increased benefit from combat advantage.
Two second cooldown.
Secondary Attack: Shadowfell Walk: Teleports through the Shadowfell to instantly travel behind his opponent and remove all threat.
Eight second cooldown.
Level 30 ability: Pierce The Light: Shadowfell Stab applies a healing penalty to it's target that stacks up to five times and grants the Shadar-kai Assassin 250 life steal that stacks up to five times.
Active bonus: You become slightly less solid, causing enemies to have a chance to deal no damage to you.
Appearance: A male Shadar-kai wearing dark black rogue gear and two daggers.
Neverwinter players are stubborn things....until you strip them down to bone. (Cursed players, my flowers, MINE!) Oh how I plotted their demise.
This game clearly needs a Parrot as an augmentation - pet. Floating around the players head, in slighty different angles than the ioun stones and occassionally landing on it's owner's shoulder every now and then (while not in combat, of course).
Since it would be an augmentation pet there wouldn't be skills but a passive:
3% cooldown reduction.
The item slots would be:
2 ring slots and a belt slot.
Name: Shields of Light
Type: Augment (Defense Deflect Regeneration)
Primary attack: N/A
Secondary attack: N/A
Level 30 ability: N/A
Passive: 5% more HP.
Appearance: 3 little light shields rotating around your armor.

Name: Necro
Type: ??????
Primary attack: Death Ray - Black/Purple beam which does damage based on power
Secondary attack: Life Syphon - Solid green beam from the other hand to transfer energy that heals a % of the damage being done simultaneously via death ray
Level 30 ability: Master of Death - Resurrects player by sacrificing own life
Passive: 55 Life steal 55 Power
Appearance: As close to a Zombie as you can get wearing black robes
Good idea but what this game really needs is a complete companion system overhaul. Actually the only companions worth it are the augmentation ones. The gateway adventures and in-game active companions bonus are only a pathetic excuse to milk more money from the walles and 12 year old kiddos.
But ho cares?
Here is my one:
Name: Usefull Companion
Type: Usefull
Primary Attack: Something that REALLY do damage or control or heal;
Secondary Attack: Same as above;
Level 30 Ability: Repeat above here;
Passive: Real IA that dont allow it do sit like a duck in AOE or act like a brainless money sink toy, oh wait...

1. Treant

Passive: bark skin- applies one layer of bark skin as per the enchantment.
appearance: tall tree like being that lumbers along with patches of leaves for hair, a long greenish bark like beard, etc...It looks like a treant.
2. Elven ranger
type: Striker (ranged)
First attack: Flurry of arrows- fires several arrows in succession at a single target doing damage based on range and level
second attack: Rain of arrows- AOE arrow attack more spread out over an area
level 30: leaves of iliyanbruen- sends out a blast of arrows like a shotgun in a cone attack doing large amounts of damage
Always tries to maintain distance from enemies.
Passive: wardens of the wild- 5% less threat in combat.

This forum set up is absolutely horrible, I cant even figure out how to get my knight of the feywild title.

The game isn't that hard, I will admit I would like a companion system overall (with an actual class that focus' on companions and having more then one active) but jesus the companions are a neat little thing. YOu act like you need them to complete ****.
