Can't decide between two classes?

Was wondering if someone could help me out with my decision. Also, does race make that big of an impact on your class selection?

I am torn between Hunter Ranger and Trickster Rogue, just not sure which one I would like to play?

I primarily play a DPS class, with that said being range or melee doesn't matter. I just like laying down damage, but I do like a class that offers versatility and utility.

So thanks in advance.

Not sure about the classes since I've played neither, but both are great especially in PvP.

You might want to try HR since it's the newest class and has some utility to it.

And yes, choice of race is rather important as you cannot reset it as of now, the bonuses the specific race gives are useful depending on your build, etc.

For that, I'd suggest Hunter Ranger, because (1) Rangers do well at all combat ranges and (2) I'm a fan of Rangers.

Of the two, I find the hunter Ranger, (HR), more enjoyable - you have the flexibility of both range and melee, and they have some pretty good heals and buffs in the nature line. The trickster rogue, (TR), can do more damage, but have much less in the way of buffs or general flexibility.

As for race - you can certainly make any race work with any class, but I like to pick a race that I haven't tried before and one whose stat bonuses and innate abilities synergize with that class or compensate for what that class may be lacking.

For both of the classes. I was thinking Drow.

Starting to think that Ranger is the way I might go.

Since 2nd edition, pretty much loved rangers.

Once again, thanks all for the advice and help.

My vote is for the Trickster Rogue. To put it short, the TR is the only class I have ever leveled to max level in any RPG ever, be it MMO or single-player. Not only that, but I have *two* rogues too, the other one being lvl 22 at the moment. I enjoy the Hunter Ranger too, but not nearly as much as I hoped I would.

    Two things to consider:

    1. The Rogue was in from the start, and has gotten quite a few updates since then. The Ranger is brand new, so it needs a lot of balance and improvements to be good. Also, the Rogue has two paragon paths to choose from, but the ranger only has one. It will get a second later on, though. This means you can customie your rogue a lot more than you can the ranger. If you want a "finished" class, go with rogue. If you are ok with your class being nerfed and changed down the line, go with ranger.

    2. The rogue is 90% melee, though it does have some ranged skills. But even these are mostly very short range, and some even has limited ammo, so to say. (meaning if you throw three daggers, you need to wait for the cooldown to stack up your ammo again.) While this could seem limiting, it means you get to specialize in melee, and be really, really good at it. The ranger is both melee and ranged, so you need to focus on both to be any good. That means getting used to switching between ranged and melee combat constantly, and picking skills that works well for both. Bear in mind you keep the same skills when you switch between ranged and combat, but they will change depending on which combat style you use. So you keep Rain of Arrow when you switch from ranged to melee, but it will act differently. I think it's swinging the daggers around you, but not sure. It's just an example. This means the rogue only has to worry about one skill set, and you can specialize it for your single playstyle. But the ranger has to pick skills that work for both ranged and melee, and you need to always remember what skill does what when you change playstyle (from ranged to melee.) This can make the ranger much harder to perfect than the rogue, making it a semi-advanced class. Still fun, though, and not as hard as it might seem. :)

And finally, we all start with two character slots. Why not pick one rogue and one ranger, and play with both? ;)

HR is more versatile. TR is more "I OS you and you cannot even see me", whatever the situation (dungeon boss, pve solo, pvp), not versatile really.

I see people suggesting the HR for vague reasons, like "it's my favorite class" or "they are new", or people talking from their PvP experiences against these two classes, but never trying the them first hand. These are not valid points of view.

I haven't leveled my HR to 60, but I know they are a good class - versatile and good DPSers. They are indeed an interesting class to play.
While TR are not as good as they used to be they're still the best single target DPS and are themselves pretty versatile. You can do some CCing, tanking and debuffing with the TR, and when it comes to taking down a boss you're the man for the job. They are not a bland class by any means and can be very fun to play - they are not called Tricksters for nothing. Their high damage is certainly their most prominent feature, but not the only one.
I don't wanna suggest any class over the other. Best advice I can give is to try them both and see which one fits you best.

I think the Half-Orc is the best class for DPS, but other races have their benefits as well. I think you can take any race and you will be fine.

Half-Orc is the best DPS choice for a TR but Human and Wood Elf are at just as good for HRs as DEX and WIS are better than STR for HRs and their final tier of the Heroic feats is really good, so the +3 feats for Humans is helpful.

Indeed, I was just talking about TRs, as it's the class I have most experience with. Half-Orc is a good choice mostly for TRs and GWFs, but the extra crit. bonus is good for any DPS class.
For my HR I picked Human for the extra feats... and because I have 2 more Elves and I didn't wanna make another :p
