Question about Companion equipment.

Heyhey all.
I have a question about Companion stats.
When I hover the mouse cursor over my companions on the chacter sheet I see their stats. These stats increase as the companions gain new levels and equip new runestones.
But I see no change in these stats when I put equipment on the companion (the three slots on the right) and no change when I put enhancements in these pieces of equipment.
Does this mean that Companions do not benefit from equipment at all? (If so why do they have 3 slots for it?)
Or does it mean that any stat bonuses from equipment are invisible, but are working, so it is still smart to put good equipment on them?
