im really liking this game and im sad to say its being killed for me due to the high costs of things

now i know people will most likely have a pop at me for this but it none the less its true this is one of the most expensive games i have played and it has no sub i was looking around the shop and AH and i was amazed at the prices of things like a bag 1'000 zen 300'000 astral diamonds to level your pet so he can go passed 20 4000 zen is 42 pounds for a horse

3000 odd astral's to respec the list goes on the AH is a waste of time for me
it seems im not the only one saying this. Its sad to me as this is one of the best games i have played and for allot of us most of the fun in getting things for our toons is lost

the winter event has its on topic of people complaining over the high costs but i have yet to see any reply from the CM or any official. The high costs is making this game off putting and i really am sad to say that. I did my first dungeon today sadly i got no loot the chest was bugged for me but it was fun
sorry for grammar spelling punctuation but i am dyslexic i do my best sorry if it offends you

Prices are expensive, but zen items are so useless it makes no sense to buy anything. Mounts are only useful for pvp due to highly instanced nature of the game, and pvp in neverwinter is so botched up anyway it's not worth it. Bags are unnecessary unless you like to hoard transmog items. You have unlimited storage in mail btw. Pets? So expensive I could buy a little library on steam for a cost of a set for a single character, and not worth the money at all. Transmog? All low level items look the same, it's not WoW where is a ton of obsolette endgame items which you could use to show off. Scrolls and health stones? If your group is good, you won't need them, if it's bad it is unlikely to make any difference. Refining? Gives unsignificant bonuses past rank 7, and we have a lot of cheaper alternatives to raise GS like campaign boons and artifacts.

The only useful item is Ioun stone, otherwise paying in neverwinter is absolutely unneeded unless you are addicted to lockbox gambling.

But yes, is hard now for new player make gear, make Ad and get the other stuff. Whit all the bad thing's in the dungeon, the duper, the gold seller almost everything is overpriced. The last istance where you can drop your first weapon set atm is heavly bugged, make almost impossible kill the last boss for the incoming of adds like a zombie apocalypse ( yes there a lot of weapon in AH, but try queque CN and you will notice how they do it in the 10 sec you stay on the party until they kick you ). So yes, this game need a massive revamp on AD, huge fix on dungeon too :/

Think of things in terms of time vs money. If you don't mind taking a little longer to get around, then the 5G horse is fine. If you want to get there faster, then you'll have to shell out for a better mount. Similarly, you can pay for part or all of any zen store purchase via astral diamonds you can earn in game, (through the exchange).

If you are willing to wait, then anything from then zen store, wondrous bazaar, or auction house can be had for free. Yes, the prices are high, but if you're willing to wait and accumulate ADs, then the prices can be reduced all the way down to 0.

If you play the free to play way, here's the average timeframe for getting what you want/need at 60. Note this is all based on one character doing all the work. it may be easier, take less time if using multiple character slots.

coalescant wards, need 14-15 per enhance slot.So 30 in all. Divided by the max refining per day and costing 100,000 ea. On average, you will wait almost 125 days to complete them. You can shave about 4 days per one you get weekly invoking, but at best don't expect more than one every 20 weeks or so, so you may save 2 days. preservation wards cost 1.00 per 10, or you can buy them on the auction hose, but you will lose approx. 7/10 once you start getting up past rank 7, for a net loss of .70 on the dollar. you can get them out of the 7-day invoke coffer as well, but again, don't expect them.

Companion upgrades cost 300,000, 500,000 and 750,000 respectively, so if you need to go all the way from white to purple, expect to wait 62.5 days per companion. Half that if going blue to purple.
    .
Mounts cost 762,000 for rank 2 upgrade, and approx. 2 million for rank 3. A minimum wait of 31.7 days to a maximum of 117 days.

NOTE: Mounts and Companions are not required to be upgraded. I am only listing the timeframes since they love to give us green mounts in the hopes we will find one we want to. They could make an X-Wing mount and I would still say no to the cost.

You cannot work multiple things at once using free to play so hope slow is your style.

This does not take the new refining system costs into effect.

I also did not bother with transmuting, daily rewards due to being in unrefined condition, and crafting costs.

coalescant wards, need 14-15 per gem slot and enhance slot. So 224 in all.

Where did you get this info from? You are completely wrong.

You only need coal wards for Weapon/Armor enhancement slots (for enchantments you need preservation wards) and you need 1 coal for a lesser, 3 for a normal and 7 for a greater. Usually a lesser enhancement does the job pretty well.

There is no point in upgrading companions. It is much cheaper to buy a purple companion than upgrading one from white/green to purple. You don't need them anyway. Companions (except augmentation) are useless in dungeons and all solo areas are way easy, so you can complete them without a companion.

Again, there is no reason to upgrade your mount. Buy a purple (or blue) mount from the zen shop. They are account wide, meaning you just have to buy it one time and use on all your characters.

Same thing with MMOs, if you are going to daily farm dungeons sell stuff on AH and doing your daily rough AD quests (includes leader ship profession tasks) you will end up making average of 100,000 AD ++ /day. It just requires a few hours of dedication of your busy precious schedule.

This game isn't designed for lazy play style, if you want something you either:

    - Farm AD for it, the free-to-play way.

    - Buy ZEN with real money, and convert it to AD. The Pay for Convenience way.

I'm going by the free to play way which means going by the ward's you buy on the AH or get out of celestial boxes. You assume I will buy preservation wards.

They added the up front cost to refining because people weren't using it. God knows what they will do with mounts and companions since we are obviously not using those features. Perhaps a weekly rental fee, or egads, durability loss.

The post was about costs. I was putting it into perspective with a hint of sarcasm to show the futility of this game's F2P model.

There are two things I would like to point out:

    1. You only need 15 coalescent wards to make a perfect weapon and armor enchantment. That's 30 in total fper character. That's not too bad at all. For normal enchantments you are better off using presdervation wards.

    2. The game is free to play. Not free. You will be tempted to buy things.

I don't agree with a lot of the prices myself but saying that it's futile to play the game free because you list off the cost of conveniences like the mount upgrades is not an area I personally agree with. Mount upgrades prices are too high but the simple solution is to throw down $30 and get a Rank 3 mount on all characters.

Free to play doesn't mean you won't be tempted to buy anything. My general rule of thumb is every account should buy one Rank 3 mount and each character should buy one bag of holding and Ioun Stone. After that everything else is very much optional. That doesn't mean the prices are set at a good amount but saying because you can't get everything within a short period of time as a person who isn't funding the game isn't necessarily a bad thing. :)

Follow this simple rule of thumb. Limit your spending to $15.00 a month. That is how I justify my spending. Another way to get geared and have access to resources is to join a good guild who shares the wealth. I know I personally stack our guild bank with all sorts of T1/T2 items, regeants, ect. Having a good group to play with in this game is so key. Especially a group who isn't greedy. What good is it to sit on a bunch of enchantments you will never use? Share the wealth! That's how our guild happens to run, but not all do.

When I first started playing I bought a Stormraider with real money, since then I have bought everything with AD because I have amassed a huge army of alts to farm AD for me. As soon as you can you should buy 2 additional character slots with AD and get them to level 3 leadership, then just rinse and repeat until you have more AD then you could ever spend. The only thing I have to spend real money on now are module packs since they are only sold outside the game for real money.

It's actually limited. Make sure you delete mail that used to hold items too as they can count towards the limit.

The problem with statements like that is ... We don't know the current numbers to be able to make this claim with any justification at all.

We don't know, for instance, how many players in game have paid the AD and upgraded their White Companions to Purple, or how many items are sold in the Z-Store each day/week/month and we don't know how many or what numbers Cryptic (and PWE) consider "enough" ... I'm sure that if 0 were sold of an item, then they might change the price ... but seeing as how we have no data on the numbers and, AFAIK, a price drop/product removal because of 0 purchases hasn't happened yet ...

Well there is your answer, just because you or I consider something to be too expensive, doesn't mean everybody does ... Look at some of the other posts in this thread, or in several threads, or in the htreads about "Gear Pics" in the sub forums, and you'll see just how much players are willing to spend ...

to the OP, i assure you that PWE does read the forums and the community managers do let the company know of the kinds of things players are talking about. however, PWE is a for-profit business and they are making business decisions based on what they are seeing and as they see fit for the good of the company. that's not to say that changes can't or won't be made, but nothing ever happens overnight. i'm absolutely not saying that AD costs on mount upgrades or companion upgrades will eventually come down. they may or they may not. but these internal discussions and decisions and reasons for such decisions are all internal and it's not usual that any for-profit company discusses internal workings with the public. it's just not usually done in any company. especially a gaming company where everyone is under a non-disclosure agreement.

but that said, there are ways to earn in-game currencies, there are ways to have fun without upgrading your mount or your companions... and there are ways to enjoy the game without spending real money. you can build a character up to level 60 and play through the two campaigns and have a decently built character. you can join a guild and experience gauntlegrym, do dungeon delves so the end chest IS unlocked. there's lots of things to see and do in this game. but all of that is entirely up to you and your preferences.

if you have any questions concerning the game, feel free to PM me.

and... since we've had to moderate this thread quite a bit, we're going to close it down.
