So tried testing out a refinement of a R6 enchantment last night. I put an exact same enchantment of the exact same rank into the refinement thingy. Guess how far the refinement bar went. Exactly 1/3rd. So doing the math... You'd need one R6 enchantment to refine/rank up and three R6 enchantments of the exact same type. Just to rank ONE R6 enchantment up to R7. That means 4 right? This is also not including the reagents and whatever ward you'd want to use. Wasn't there a bunch of people yapping before about how it only takes 2 to rank up? When I tested a R2 enchantment earlier, the refinement bar moved a grand 1/2 of the way when I put an enchantment of the exact same type and rank into the refinement thingy. So does that mean at R9, it'll take even MORE than 4 enchantments of the exact same type/rank in order to rank it up? I know you can use other enchantments and whatnot, but if you have to put in the equivalent amount in order to get the same amount of "umph" to the refinement bar...

That is a problem and only R1s seem to need only 3 base + 2 others. When you get to R7s you will need 5 (Base + 3 + 1 to level up.)

Tip: Don't use upgraded enchantments to feed enchantments.
You get better results from using rank 1-4 to feed rank 5 and up. Don't use rank 5 and up to feed other enchantments.
The number one issue with the new refinement system is people keep thinking that they should upgrade enchantments to higher ranks like they did before. Don't. It wastes time, effort and money.
The amount of enchantments, side by side, is very similar. The benefit is in the lack of enchantment losses. Not only are there less possible points of failure but those points of failure no longer result in a loss of enchantments (unless you don't use preservation wards after Rank 7) and thus the actual number of enchantments needed is far less.
Exactly what Ambi said - find em and feed em. I am working on getting all my slotted enchants and runes on my main two companions (Stone, Lillend) to r7. Anything slotted gets fed with any matching enchant I find. Things that don't match go into the armor enchant (weapon enchant is ready to go). Progress is steady, and it helps to slot some of the Sharandar enchants to help boost your supply. Even just running the dailies in Sharandar and Dread Ring can really help - r4 enchants give a nice amount of refinement points.

Haven't gone beyond level 7 yet.
