I was thinking about comming back to game after being away for a few months. My question is simple, before I left the max rank you could get your companions to was 30, can you get them higher rank now or is it still maxed out at 30?

Rank is still 30. Unless they increase the level cap for players, I see no reason why they would increase the rank for companions.

Companion levels are not the same as player levels. In short, double the companion's level to get their equivalent player level, (so a level 30 companion equals level 60).
