Cryptic says: Hold That

From the Ranger preview:
The solution was found in the Hunter Ranger's hybrid nature; by pressing Tab, players can swap between their hero's long bow and dual blades. Each of their At-Will and Encounter powers have two implementations, based on which weapon the Hunter has equipped — moreover, those twin powers are on different cooldowns.

Rangers get 6 encounters at a time; Clerics still get 3 with few viable choices (I assume).
Every other class is getting bolstered with one additional Paragon Path when the update goes live. . . . The Devoted Cleric will get the Anointed Champion path, giving them a set of group buffs.

Did you want healing or damage on your cleric? Too bad! More of the same for you!

hmm. I'm not going to prejudge. Those group buffs would presumably also act personally. Presuming the same powers selection, those group buffs might - I dunno - work to actually increase damaging encounters like daunting light? We have a few of those type of feats now, on a mostly mitigate and heal paragon path - and some people put them to very good use. A buff path with more or bigger effects might be very interesting.

Sounds like the ranger will have some hectic rotations going on. Which may mean they'll set a new low for average damage per encounter - if the encounters are on distinct cooldowns and you can spam 6 of them - making them super powerful would be a bit unbalanced.

I get the impression that ranger DPS will rely heavily on encounter spam and continually switching fighting modes. You don't get to choose between melee/range, you have to use both if you want to maximize DPS. Such a playstyle would require you to be very mobile, which would explain why the developers keep saying that mobility is key to the ranger's playstyle. The balancing factor - fighting in melee range can be dangerous, and unlike the rogue (dodge, ItC, stealth, etc) the Ranger will likely have limited repositioning/immunity options. Their "normal" dodge definitely doesn't look too promising and seems to require good precision/timing. Sominator reveals an escape encounter, though if you slot too many of those you'll gimp your own DPS. The ranger will probably have powers which do more damage if some other power is already affecting the target, or something similar. That should keep players busy about whether they should be slotting damaging or escape powers.
You there. New to the game? Feeling overwhelmed? Maybe you think getting to end-game is impossible for a casual player like yourself, or maybe you just need to be around a community that helps each other stay sane and competitive with the latest news, current trends, random chitchat and most of all LEGIT (that is, we try to keep things fair) gameplay. God, that sounds horrible.

"Legolas, why are you stabbing orcs in the face?"

"My archery skills are on cooldown! Back in a sec!"

This made me laugh pretty hard. I think rangers are going to have a pretty high skill cap, will be interesting to see what some people can get out of them.

Also, our current paragon path for clerics is basically damage focused. Terrifying Insight is damage feature, the daily with that paragon path is a single target nuke, our at will is a DoT. If they would fix ArP affecting cleric abilities you could make a dps cleric as it is now. My guild already hates me when I decide to go full on dps on my cleric in skirmishes and top damage hee hee.

I'm already shuddering at the thought of trying to heal a ranger. Just imagine how hard it's going to be to target a heal on them if they're supposed to be moving around that much.

Don't worry, they'll be hugging the blue circle just like the others. Just because a new class is being released doesn't mean the encounter design is going to change all that much ;)

But concerning the topic, yeah it is annoying that Rangers will have 6 encounter powers. More annoying still that they're putting in another dps class before anything else even remotely interesting.

I wouldn't say damage-focused, our damage is more a result of the fact that we need to keep attacking to build AP and divine power so we can use our strongest abilities. Even Terrifying Insight gives you the highest bonus only if keep attacking the same target/s over and over again. "Attack-focused" or "offense-focused" fits more.
