Anybody else think the food items from the Midsummer Festival was a great idea?
I think that the devs should really consider adding food permanantly and, a decent variety as well. There could even be a "Culinary" profession to make advanced dishes. The vendors could sell basic dishes at Taverns and such, instead of Health Pots (Why would I go to a bar for medical supplies?).
The food could act the same as the food introduced already in the Midsummer festival. It would also benefit the RP part of this game fairly well.
A lot of people aren't to interested in professions where they can't turn in much AD or make mega gear, but much like the alchemy task there could be certain, rare, food that would be considered something like a delicacy, that benefits the player consuming the food tremendously, and/or food that have odd, amusing effects on the consumer. Of course the exoctic eats would be higher up the level ladder.
Now I know that Cryptic is big on money items (How else are they going to keep a F2P game up and running), and of course if a profession was introduced where you could make food, there would be more of a reason for people to purchase profession packs.

Well, mechanically, the food items are basically potions w/ a different combination of effects. Frankly, I think we have too many different consummables as it is, so I don't think that more are needed. Food isn't really, *at least IMO), something you'd use during combat, either...

I know food is just like potions ...mechanics wize but there is just something about
getting food components and making a meal for people that feels so MMOish
should be relatively easy to do to since you can probably just use alchemy as a template.
if you want it to seem different than alchemy :
have random recipes drop out of experimentation that could be added to book or sold to others.
special meals set up a little table with a meal to click on for a party buff (using portable altar tech)
Cosmetic foods...if your wielding a cup of wine in weapon slot it has your character holding a goblet
Ok, at first I was gonna say no to more food. Ive had a dozen feasts in the last few days and I'm afraid I cant eat no more....unless you have pudding. Then all bets are off.
However, Vrtesseract's idea of cosmetic foods has won me over. My dwarf simply MUST be able to use a turkey leg as a weapon, and failing that a frying pan.

I was thinking about this topic a bit more, and here's my idea:
What if, instead of making consumables, cooking instead created "meals". These meals would be sort of like a portable shrine, except you'd have to interact w/ them to gain the buff. You'd start out being able to make a basic meal. It would create an item in your inventory that, when used, produces a simple table w/ seating for 5 people. When you interact w/ the table, your character sits down and begins to eat the meal that was prepared. You can't start eating while in combat, and you can cancel it at any time, (you won't get the buff unless oyu finish your meal though). It wouldn't take too long to finish, like maybe 15-30 seconds. Upon completing the meal you'd gain some small but long term buffs from it. As you progress through the skill, you can create more substantial meals that provide better buffs. You can only have 1 meal buff on you at a time.
Here's an example of some meals, (numbers can be adjusted as needed):
1. Basic meal: +50 regen, power, and recovery for 1 hour.
2. Spicy meal: +100 crit, +1% crit severity, and +1% action point gain for 1 hour.
4. Energizing meal: +200 lifesteal, +200 recovery, +200 movement for 1 hour.
In a way, (and fitting IMO), meals would be a way to prepare yourself and your team for an adventure, or to recover partway through.
Edit:
Some other ideas for this:
All meals start with a basic meal, then upgrading it in some way. Perhaps various ingredients account for different buffs; spices/peppers would be for offense, wheat/grains/breads for defense, and meats for other bonuses, (like beef might be more defensive, but wild boar could be more offensive in nature).
This profession could function like the Horadric cube in Diablo 2 - you combine the ingredients in a cooking pot, (with some being necessary and others "for flavor" to produce meals with the properties you want. Some flavors may cancel others out, so you need to find the right balance of spice and basic ingredients.

It is a wonderful idea but bag space is already at a premium. It would be cool if they added a Food only bag as something you could make with the new profession and it gave us another bag slot that held all the completed meals and ingredients.
Actually adding food would a great idea, especially RP wise. You can make the meals purchasable from taverns/inns. Use bioshrike's examples for buffs. Pricing could follow the Injury Kit scale. No need to make it yet another profession out of it, although a cool idea it would be too much like the alchemy profession which already has number complaints about it.

What if this cooking profession only had 1 item in your main inventory - a table that acted like a portable alter. The rest of the ingredients would sit in your profession inventory, and you interacting w/ the table and placing the right combination of ingredients on it is what determined what buffs eating at said table provided?
Another idea would be to have the item be a stew pot over a fire type of thing, and you'd place your ingredients in it, then others could come and interact w/ it to receive the buff.

A food type inventory tab would work well.
