How to learn basic Lore?

Hi,

Usually when I am playing a game, I like to understand the world better. When Star Trek Online (I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS GAME!!!) was nearing it's premiere, I suddenly got all interested in Star Trek... in the end it got me to become a complete Trekkie (next to being a Star Wars fan, so you can easily greet me by saying "May the Force live long and prosper" ;) ), and from a short journey to learn the game's backstory I ended up watching all TV series and feature movies.

Now - I would love to learn about the universe behind Neverwinter. I only briefly played Neverwinter Nights, and I spent some quality time with the Baldur's Gate (but this was ages ago), but I would like to learn more. Would someone maybe recommend a source? Maybe the Lore&Legends books (I found pdf from D&D second edition available for purchase)?

I'm looking mostly for ebooks, pdf's, kindle edition, whatever like this :P so that I can read it offline on my iPad, while on Holiday :).

Hope that I'm not doubling any posts on that - and thank you for all and any help :).

I've played DnD since the late 70s but I also dont really know the Forgotten Realms lore. Neverwinter is a book in a series starting with the GG. I would recommend going to your local library and borrowing any of the Forgotten Realms books. Also theres a Forgotten Realms guide someplace apparently. I havent done much research yet but theres probably numerous fan sites about the Forgotten Realms world out there. Its possible that you might find some of the FR novels on ebook, i'll be looking for those too.

I remember reading a book or two from the Forgotten Realms ages ago.... what I am looking for are the basics on deities, geography, races... just to get a glimpse of this world, basic understanding :).

    Thanks for your advice :).

Keep in mind that some of the information you find in the old Forgotten Realms may be outdated, as they were written for the 2nd and 3rd editions of Dungeons and Dragons. Neverwinter takes place in the 4th Edition version of the Forgotten Realms setting.

Still, getting old information and then just looking up the development between the two editions (about a hundred years of apocalypse and weird magic HAMSTER) could probably work.

I'd recommend sticking with 3.5e and earlier, it's a lot more involved and interesting, 4e involves a lot of random stupid that isn't actually necessary to understanding Neverwinter.

Starting with D&D 3.0 and later, WOTC started to release Forgotten Realms Handbooks. Those are a wealth of knowledge about the world of Forgotten Realms, although the area of Neverwinter is really just a footnote within those source books.

Now if you are looking for lore to use in making Foundry quests, then I'd suggest going old school. Some of my 2nd Edition D&D books from TSR are still vastly superior. To be specific, I like the 2nd Ed source books for the various deities of Faerun. These are so many gods that they had to produce x3 source books.

    Faiths & Avatars
    Powers & Pantheons
    Demihuman Deities

While the WOTC editions have ended up killing off or merging some of these 2nd Ed gods, there is a lot of information in these older source books. I'm planning on writing a Foundry series about dead gods, which will draw a lot from these books. If you're interested in them, I'm sure that you can find them in PDF form through an online vendor. My favorite used games vendor is out of stock of the primary two books, otherwise I'd post a link for them in this post.
