Gathering Professions - totally wrong mechanic Cryptic

The cornerstone of progression in all RPGs, including MMO RPGs, is that you get better at something the more you do it.

Professions do that.

But the class designated "gathering" skills linked to Professions do not.

As it stands you get I "Gathering Skill" and it never improves. Other gathering skills are only accessible via Kits, and also never improve.

What should happen if you were following a D&D pattern is that each player gets a base % success chance in all Gathering Skills of around 10%, and that the Class Gathering Skill has success % of 60%.

Allow Kits to add up to 25% to that base.

Allow every ten successful uses of a Gathering Skill to increase its base % by 1%.

Allow any % over 100 to count as a Critical Bonus, adding to the quality / quantity of loot found.

That way the player feels like he is "progressing".

RPGs that don't engage "progression" tend to have difficulty with medium & long term player retention.

Something I would think you would be eager to avoid.
