From my understanding this file does not self truncate and has to be manually deleted if you want to reduce it's file size... I have to ask... the fact that so much gets written to it... and People do utilize SSD's would that not be just as detrimental as the Windows Page File and the TempRec folder for Media Center to SSD's?
if I was to make a symbolic Link would that work so I can move it to a secondary drive off of my SSD so that all the garbage writes that the combat log does don't make the lifespan of my SSD decrease any faster... it's becuase enough these wasteful patches are being done that don't fix anything useful... The mask didn't need to be fixed... The roofs in PE did not need to be blocked off... The HTML tags in history plus breaking the cursor did not need to be broken... all that is just wasting my SSD's life and I support the developers enough.
Hey, did you hear about the new zone and class coming out? Great, I know.
I kid. In seriousness, I use SSD and was a bit shocked at the size of the TXT and I made the mistake of trying to open it in Notepad. Anyway, this would be a great optimization change for both SSD and platter drives. A constant write to this file for those on platter would force the head to reach that location for each combat log, unless we're both misunderstanding how the file works and it's stored in RAM and then written at particular intervals, say every 5 minutes. That's reasonable.
Anyway, besides the confusion I have of F2P MMOs trying to install application files in the Users folder, I think it's clear the folks running the game may just be dragging the **** stuck under their shoe for as long as it leaves a mark(get that money!) on the carpet instead of stopping to clean it off.
An easy way to deal with this would be to allow the log to have a directory assigned for it, managed through the configuration. My SSD would certainly appreciate not being hammered all the time.

/combatlog 0 - Turns it off
/combatlog 1 - Turns it on
