Skimish NPC can die? So...

I was in the Orc Assault skimish a while back. In the Orc Assault skimish, normally we wait for the waves to come to us to be cleared.
Now these 4 other players keep rushing to the end killing everything, and I realised that the skimish did not proceed to the 2nd wave after 5 minutes. I also noticed that all the npcs, including the quest giver Alrgth (or some name) was missing. Which means they can be killed?
I asked them politely to come down so the wave will continue, but they did not respond, so I assume they do not speak English, and I quit the skimish since it was going nowhere after 7-8 minutes and time is wasted. But does anyone know whether the skimish will fail, since the main NPC is presumely killed?
