Request - toggle for moving objects in 3D mode

The problem: moving objects around in 3D mode. You are still moving an object, but you need to move your character to a new spot. Moving gets you out of edit mode for the selected object. Then you have to move, try to select it again (which isn't always easy or possible for large objects) and repeat.
The request: give me a toggle to put an object in edit mode or take it out. That way I can move around while keeping the same object locked in edit mode. I can tweak it, move around to the other side, tweak, etc. OR at least change it so that movement keys don't take objects out of edit mode.
