Do rank x experimentations until you get enough basic alchemical knowledge items. At which point, you can do the task that gives enough XP to level up.
The first few tasks of Alch don't reward exp, look at the rewards column and it'll tell you what the reward is for that task. The first few tasks only reward materials, not exp. You'll need to find the Basic Alchemy Skills scroll to advance past level 1.

In addition to the above posts, the Basic Alchemy Scrolls are RNG drops, as far as I can tell.
Possibly from profession packs I would assume as well... all I know is I am sitting on a mountain of rank 1 HAMSTER waiting for this stupid scroll to show up anywhere.

basically what dardove said. you do the gather simple components, then vitriol extraction. after you have enough do the rank 1 experimentation. This will either give you an unstable potion, that doesn't really do anything of value as far as i saw, some blow up for damage or another random buff, other times the experimentation will give you 1 basic alchemical knowledge along with the random potion. After you get enough knowledge you can do the available quest for xp. First only takes 1, the next levels and so on take multiple experiments. Since you don't always get the knowledge each time you do it. Then rinse and repeat. Just make sure to have the 'hide tasks with unmet requirements' turned off and you'll see what's required to move on.
