I've seen a lot of players with custom colored gear and was wondering do they buy the dyes in the AD or is there a place where it drops? also for a bonus question, how does one get AD nowadays? seems the economy is jacked and pretty much I get an average of 200 AD from AH and left relying on daily from Rhix.

There are various ways to get your hands on dye packs. Eighter from AH or ZEN shop. You get 4 dyes from a leveling chest you have with you from the start, but they are bound to your character so you cannot sell them. And how to get AD? Run T1, T2 dungeons, sell loot. Get enchants, sell them. Thats pretty much the way I do it.

I buy dye packs with astral. I usually don't need all four of the dye packs, so I'll resell the ones I don't need and recoup some of my losses that way. Yesterday I purchased 200 zen for around 58k during one of the dips. I used 2 of the blue dyes, and then sold the other 2 for 22k each.

As for making money, other than Leadership the only reliable thing I have are Dungeon Delves. Without resorting to exploits, you can still get three Spellplague runs in during a delve. If lucky, you end up with one or two good items to sell and make your astral. Some classes have it easier than others (Rogue gear seems to always sell incredibly high, Fighters seem to get the short end of the stick).

There are things you can sell for good money that people never think of. Such as the useless PvP companion. Or selling level 2 professions assets. You get way more money than doing the dailies, which are essentially a complete waste of time.

OP: note that there is a difference between "dye" and "dye pack".

Individual bottles of dye, you can use the Change Appearance window to apply that color to one of three places on the armor piece (primary, secondary, trim?).

A dye pack, on the other hand, is a specific set of three colors, pre-defined to each of the three color locations. It's not just "here's three dye bottles in these three colors." (So, a Nightmare dye pack will always make a specific chest piece look the same way - there's no option to put the red in one place and the black in another.)

(personally, I've made a lot of alts, so most of my dying has been with the four free random bottles you get on each new character. I've only tried one dye pack - the one from the Ardent Coin shop; and bought one set of red dyes to help fill out the coloring on my lv60 "main".)
