how do i transmute gear

i see characters all the time who have gear that says has been transmuted to xxxxx how do i transmute gear?

Right click on the piece of gear.
Select "Change Appearance".

Drag another (same type) piece of gear into the right hand box in the window.
Pay through the nose in Astral Diamonds.
Presto, new appearance.

This is also how you use dyes.

Heads up, the item you put in the right-hand box will be destroyed as it gives its appearance to the item in the left box.

And you lose the transmutation...next time you change new better gear. But you can allways:

Right click on the piece of gear.
Select "Change Appearance".

Drag another (same type) piece of gear into the right hand box in the window.
Pay through the nose in Astral Diamonds.
Presto, new appearance.

to keep the nice look you have chosen, until you get new better gear...

And if you're smart and decide to wait until you're lvl 60 and do the whole look change:
Helmet: 60k ADs
Armor: 60k ADs
Arms: 60k ADs
Feet: 60k ADs
Main Weapon: 60k ADs
Off Hand Weapon: 60k ADs
Belt: 60k ADs
Maybe a Cape: 60k ADs
(these are round numbers, but close enough)
