Neverwinter Arena System

What is this?
Arena PvP is simply deathmatch style combat. You win the match by reaching a preset number of kills or being ahead in kills when the time limit is reached. Players will gain and lose arena rating based on the difficulty of their opponents in ranked, or be able to play more casually in unranked skirmish matches. Players will be able to see ranked teams on a ladder and compete for top spots.

Why?
Currently, there is no incentive in playing PvP matches. A coordinated team of 5 players will almost never lose because it is rare to find another team of 5 to play against. This leads to newer/ungeared players getting discouraged and seeing no way to win, while more experienced teams and geared players are unable to find good competition. This system gives players an actual reason to play PvP, as well as giving all players a chance to play matches closer to their skill level. Having a ladder system greatly encourages competition and promotes the game to a whole new player base. It also allows for tournaments and competitive streams which increase NW viability to unaware players via twitch and other streaming sites.

Team Sizes and Formats
The team sizes will be 2v2, 3v3, or 5v5 players. Once you choose your team size, you can choose to play in either ranked or skirmish format. Ranked teams will be preformed teams with a set limit of players (and a set limit of teams per player). Skirmish format will allow you to queue with your party, or solo, and be matched with other players to fill out your party in a non-ranked match. Arena PvP will only be available for level 60 players.

Rankings
The arena system will use an ELO Rating System. "The ELO system takes the score of two opponents and calculates a statistical chance of winning based off those scores. After the match it uses the difference between the calculated chance of winning and the actual results. The difference between the two probabilities is then applied to the maximum amount of points allowed per match." (wowwiki)

Special Rules
In the arena system there will be rules specifically related to arena PvP.
  • All mounts will be set to default speed.
  • No elixirs can be used.
  • Only PvP potions can be used, and only when out of combat for 5 seconds. Healing effect is removed upon taking damage.

Rewards
Rewards for this system can be as simple as gaining arena rating and climbing the ladder. Players may be rewarded for their ranking at the end of a 'Season' with titles for finishing in the top 1%,5%, 10%, 25%, ect. They can also be improved over time to include arena points to buy arena gear/enchants/mounts/costumes. All items purchased with arena points would bind on pickup.

Tournaments
The tournament system would ideally take the appearance of the Bloodline Champions Tournament System. For those unaware, there are tournaments automatically scheduled throughout the day. Each tournament has a qualification phase where you can play as many matches as you wish until it is over. From the qualification matches you gain points, and if you have enough points at the end of qualification (top 256 teams, ect.). The players are then seeded by qualification points. You move on to the actual tournament and play against whoever you match up against in the bracket. During the tournament phase, all players in the game are able to view a live bracket (and in BLC you are also able to spectate the game). From here the possibilities are endless (tournament points, tournament titles, end of season championships, ect.).

Why should Neverwinter go through this trouble?
In case any NW staff views this, I would like to address a few things. Although I have mentioned things such as tournaments and advanced rewards, none of this things are critical to this system being successful from the start. The basic premise of this system can be implemented with little effort beyond a team creation system and ladder ranking system, and expanded upon in time.

This system would greatly increase the viability of this game to a very large player base that you are currently ignoring. Competitive eSports are larger than ever right now, and having no competitive system is a deal breaker for a large portion of gamers. Beyond competitive players, it also gives your casual player base an opportunity to play without fear of being put into highly unbalanced games. People also love to compete for top titles as well as watch the top players in the game. Since release, player streams for Neverwinter have almost disappeared. Getting Neverwinter back into the top games list requires this dramatic change and would greatly increase the population of this game (which obviously equals more Zen purchases for your company).

This system provides a viable endgame this game desperately needs. Although I very much like this game and feel that minus a few bugs and large exploits you have all done a great job, there is hardly much incentive to play this game other than during dungeon delves. There is a very small amount of endgame content and much of that is trivial to say the least. People need a reason to strive for the best gear and a reason to want to play other than during a DD event. NW, your community needs endgame. Endgame drives sales. Provide this to your community and watch the results.

Where do we go from here?
If you agree with this, tell your friends, post here, keep this viable. Also, please leave your ideas and comments on this system so we can all help to create something amazing.

Enjoy,
Wes2000

You've lose all my interest when you said "rankings".

Mindless deathmatch should never be a ranked part of any mmo, its lowest and tbh lamest part of pvp that absolutely forces FOTM specs and forces out whole classes without IWIN skills.

    Big NO.

    No.

The PvP in this game is unbalanced to the max and according to the patch notes it still will be after launch.
