Quest completing when I do nothing.

Hi! Great game, having a blast, but I have a bug or complaint if it's as intended...
I'm doing the "Rest in Peace" quest in Pauper's Field, where you Consecrate the fields...
I'm going along solo (not in a party), and come to the Western Field. I stop where the path leads, before the shiny ethereal wall, because I noticed two others already at the banner fighting... not wanting to interfere, and to solo it, I hang back, never passing the ethereal yellow wall at the end of the quest path... I never touch the banner, I never touch a mob... the two players finish their quest, and somehow, it finished for me.
Is that working as intended? It'd be nice to know so I can plan ahead.
