So I'm moving through the Enclave tonight and see companions everywhere. Estimated 20 by each exit and about 30 or so around the market/mail area. I look at the number of people in the instance and there's a whole 14! So what's the deal with 100+ abandoned companions all standing around?

I find it pretty funny. It gives you the opportunity to read all the companion names as they wait patiently by the dungeon entrances.

This was reported by many in the Closed betas.
Either they don't know how to fix it or it is low on their priority list.
I would guess it is the former but the latter is easier to sell to the public.
"Beware the engineers of society, I say, who would make everyone in all the world equal. Opportunity should be equal, must be equal, but achievement must remain individual."
Compainions are generally pretty buggy. I haven't figured out the exact trick to it but if I log in with one I can usually summon another as well. They both follow me around and seem to do stuff. I think only one gets xp though. One will vanish when I zone. I have not put any real effort into figuring out what is what or even if both actually do anything or it just appears they do. Pretty sure it would be considered an exploit if you could get multiple companions running properly.
I saw everyone standing at the zonelines but never stopped to see they were only compainions.
Pretty sure my compainions AI was programmed by a monkey so I am not surprised to find out they have more issues.
Training time doesn't sync with the time they are gone. Mine usually goes negative like the AH apparently does.
I had one in training and it still leveled when I finished a quest. Even though it had no icon up on my screen and it was not obviously active. Might be legit but I have not noticed it before last night. It was a fubar on my part since I usually remember to have one up that can use the xp when I hand in.
Oh well. Silly bugs and they do need fixing but I am sure they have other issues with higher priority right now so I wouldn't expect any solutions soon.

I like the effect. Seems like there are alot more people around.

That does give me a chuckle sometimes. Or a bout of eye rolling.
I always figured that the companions were too clever to actually follow us into a dark dungeon teeming with monsters.
"Sure thing, boss," they say, struggling to keep a straight face, "I'll be right behind you!!@!"
And then, while we're on the loading screen, they deploy a robot copy of themselves to cover for them, while they sit around outside playing cards and having a good old laugh at our expenses.
"Duct tape is like the force; it has a light side and a dark side and it holds the universe together."

It's just their way of populating the world. There is actually only us 7 people playing, the rest are companions. ;-)
You ever wondered why the dungeon queues are so slow? It's because they haven't figured out how to get companions to queue ;-)
