Currently companions are losing like 1/2 of all their dmg because they only go up to rank 30 (level 30) but you're fighting lvl 50-60 mobs and because of the level difference they get a MASSIVE dmg penalty.
It's not defense or dmg reduction on the mobs doing it, for example.
Took my bird to the dummies, rank 30, I'm lvl 60. He does 90 dmg per second on his aura, about 700 on his nuke, about 260 on his main attack, it's decent dmg.
Took him to Helm's Hold, fought lvl 31 mobs, he's doing about 80 (90) dmg on aura, 640 (700) on his nuke, and like 235 (260), because of those mob's resistances, pretty simple.
Now I fight some lvl 50 something mobs in Rothe, suddenly he's doing like 20 (30) dmg on his aura, 200 (240) on his nuke, and 50 (80) on his main attacks. He basically does 1/3 the base dmg he SHOULD be doing, even the tooltips show what he SHOULD be doing. These are just rough numbers.
I always figured his dmg being so low as I was leveling him was just him being low rank, but realize now that it's maxed out how borked this is.
I even tested this by bringing my 30 something Alt to Rothe Valley and fighting some lvl 50 mobs and was literally losing half my BASE dmg because of the level difference.
Please take this penalty off companions, it makes the striker companions completely useless as their only goal is to do dmg.
Anyway, again I really hope this get's seen an added to the massive list of bugs.
FYI, companion ranks work differently than our levels.
1 companion level is 2 of ours.
So a rank 30 companion is essentially level 60.

I indeed just completed leveling my phoera yesterday, I spend over 300k AD on it with runes and equipment...
And in the end, I'm just better of using my level 15 cleric even if it dies constantly, a few scattered heals from her are still just better than the completely useless damage that phoera does.
I m not sure it would be able to kill the smallest trash mob damaging it for an hour straight really.
How do you want it to even remotely compare to a heal that is going restore 20% of my total health ?
I feel like I just got my AD stolen tbh.
The only thing phoera has for itself is a nice model but that's it.
Compared to pets that buff your own stats it's just a bad joke.
I can understand that some stuff are better and cost more, that is progression.
But here it's just not progression, it's complete screw, a relatively expensive lvl 30 companion,
that is in the end less effective than the giveaway cleric companion from the start ?

I don't think it's simply a level scaling issue. I think the issue lies in stat availability. With the limited equipment/runes/enchantments you can put on a companion, you just can't get enough armor penetration/power for it to matter. Currently monsters have 22% damage reduction from armor, meaning you need ~2200 armor penetration to get a full hit on them. Top that off with very low power, and the hits just don't matter.
My suggestion would be, for companions to do % based damage. Nothing huge, but flat % based damage scaling off the stats it receives from equipment/runes/enchants. For example...
Ability "X" does .5% of the targets health in damage increasing by .2 for every 100 power.
If you get your companion up to 500 power, every attack would do 1.5% of the targets health in damage. On trash mobs, this seems like a small number...but on a boss it starts to add up.
Not saying these are the numbers that should be used...but % based damage (much like the cleric companions % based healing) would ultimately scale through all content and actually make the gear you give your companions outside of stone/cat matter in all situations.
On a side note, I think there should be a flat % reduction to AoE damage melee companions receive as well. It's ridiculous how quickly a companion will drop. Again, not something that will keep them alive forever, but enough to let them survive 2-3 AoE hits since they aren't intelligent enough to move out of a red circle.

I remeber having a very tough time with epic spider queen b/c someone had that golem pet and it kept standing in her life leech aoes (plus the owner kept rezzing it, le sigh).

And making them good is about changing a value in some DB to increase the base damage.
If the issue is related to companion being OP at low level it could just deal a portion of your damage.
Anyway those kind of things doesn't require a lot of work to get fixed, it's obviously intended.
They make you buy and level one of those relatively affordable phorea then so,
once you are all frustrated after reaching lvl 30 and seeing how it sucks,
they wait for you to rush to the zen store and buy some companion.
It's pretty standard.
They got me there, could have bought something from the store but I don't like getting tricked.
I m playing some other game atm, just logging in for my auctions, will f2p forever from now on
