Philosophy
A Guardian is patient, and does not let himself get carried away by the bloodlust of battle. He maintains situational awareness, and trys to predict the fight. In order to do your job effectively, you must master your punting skills, and learn to prioritize targets and use these to eliminate them, or maintain them engaged on you.
Playstyle
First lets lay down the basics of it.
-Tanks have innate DMG resistance.
-Knockbacks are your best CC skills.
-Tab Mark, is in fact a very powerful taunt. Spamming it is possible and effective.
-You cant tank without Enhanced Mark.
Powers on your bar
One of the best features about this game, is how tanking isn't just about taunt and stand there, but it involves dynamic use of your CC skills, in order to effectively tank. While most will go form more survival, and resistance, its actually a detriment to your tanking and dmg abilities. At lvl 60, you should have a variety of powers to choose from, but since punting mobs off bridges adds to your dmg, and effectiveness, and knockbacks are you main form of CC, I equipped these:
Class
-Enhanced mark(Double the threat if fully specced, and targets gain threat while marked even if not attacking)
-Trample the fallen (Adds to your dmg on those that get knocked down, and increased threat from feats)
Daily
-Supremacy of Steel (Massive dmg dealer when lots of mobs, especially if timed with enforced threat)
-Indomitable Strength (Great additional single target, long knockback/prone)
Encounters
-Bull Charge (Single Target knockback/prone)
-Enforced Threat (AoE force Taunt)
-Front Line Surge (AoE Knockback/prone)
You can switch bull charge, for "knights valor" to increase your threat output and mob management. But its a double edged blade, if your group doesn't move out of reds, and as is your not at 100% u might die. Personally I prefer oneshotting elites near ledges with "Bulls Charge"
At will
-Cleave(AoE dmg dealer)
-Threatening Rush (ur best friend, aoe mark, and a medium range charge)
Feats
You will go down the path of the conqueror. It should look something like this with room to make modifications depending your playstyle.
-Improved Vigor(For PvP and hard fights)
-Reinforced Surge(Extra knockdown main CC, threat gen)
-Cruel Cut Style(+15% dmg on your main dmg dealer)
-Tactical Superiority(for pvp option)
-Reckless Attacker(with so much cc u hardly ever block, so double the power)
-Fight on(Encounter cooldowns reduced)
-Battle Trample(25% weap dmg as threat, and 25% weapon dmg on knockdown)
Power Use PvE
Engaging
The rotation is rather simple. If its a range pull you use your "Tab" (mark), u can mark multiple targets and gain threat as they come into range of attack. Once Mobs are in range, you use your "Threatening Rush", this will remark the targets and add threat from the original mark, and the new. If the whole group of mobs is not on you, cast your "Enforced Threat" take a couple steps back and use your "Front Line Surge". "Bull Charge" is more of a sniping skill, if you see a particularly dangerous target, near a ledge, and hasn't been punted yet, you use that, it has a very short cooldown, allowing you to punt various elite mobs, and add tons to your dmg.
Surrounded and overwhelmed
If this is happening your best bet is to leap back and forth with "threatening rush" in an attempt to mark as many targets as you can. Followed by "Enforced Threat", then "front line surge". Repeat if you haven't obtained enough Action points to use your supremacy of steel. Most will argue that Villain's Menace is better because of dmg bonus, and anti CC, but Supremacy of Steel keeps proccing regardless of your state and procs often for a decent amount of dmg, multiplying your threat. Also blocking while its running deals dmg, and adds more action points, allowing you to reuse, or cast another daily.
Look at them fall..
Your best friends, if you want to go up in the dmg meter, will be well timed knockbacks on carefully selected targets. Avoid wasting them on small fry, use them on the bigger ones that have ton of health. You have 3 choices, you can single target the big ones using your "bull charge" and your "Indomitable Strength", or you can play it dangerous and get real close a ledge, flank ur target and use "Front Line Surge" wich has a short knockback but its multi target and effective. Also these maximize the threat gain from trample the fallen, and the dmg bonus is actually around 35%.
Conclusion
With practice you will find yourself on top 3 of dps meters, without relying much on gear, or increased dps stats. If you have dps gear, and the gems, adding crit to your Guardian is your best bet. You will enjoy knocking stuff away (off ledges preferably) and see noticeable gains in your damage, as well as have a more enjoyable experience tanking since its more dynamic. Experiment with it like this, you will find that once you've settled into it, anyone will have a real hard time taking threat from you.
I will be adding videos some time soon of runs thru some of the more popular dungeons so you can see it in action.
For PvP please refer to Envy's guide, theres nothing else that can be said that he hasnt already explained in his post.
