60 GF taking the same hits as a 44 CW :(

Helping some friends out in "Pirate kings lair". They are level 44 and lvl 46 and they play as cleric and control wizard.
Im playing as a GF that have a full tank spec with complete tier 1 and 5000 defense.
I noticed i was taking 600-1000 damage pr hit from the normal mobs. My friends got hit for the same amount, even though i have 5k defence and about 38% damage reduction. Not to mention im at level 60.
Seems like defense is just for show? Am i the only one experiencing this issue?
