Advice on a boss fight - Fortress of Skulls

So, I've run into a bit of a problem. So far I haven't had much problem with bosses, nor the spawns that go with them, but I'm rather stuck on this particular boss fight. The boss himself is not the issue, similar enough to most (even though playing on a low-end computer with so-so connection does sometimes give me small lag spikes which prevents me getting out of the red circle in time), nor, in fact, most of the adds. The fight goes rather smoothly, until a pair of Ruffians spawn at about a third of fourth of the fellow's hp left. They are a bit too robust to be taken out easily and since there are a pair of them (plus, of course, the boss, who is also a heavy hitter) I can only effectively take one out of combat (via Choke or some other alternative). The main problem is their ability to knock me down, which effectively means I'm done for, as the boss gets the jump as well. I can only dodge so often and there are simply not enough spawns in the game for me to get the Daily more than once.

Now, I've tried with several combinations of powers. First I went, as I have for most of the game, with a rather single-target focused combination of Choke, RoE, Chill Strike(TAB) and some AoE (I tried a few combinations), with Ice Knife and Arcane Singularity as dailies - although I found AS pretty useless as I didn't have much AoE damage to do, mostly just used it to get them away from me. That combination worked rather horridly, even the previous sets of spawns gave me trouble. Heeding some advice I switched to more of an AoE and multiple target damage build, with Chill Strike(TAB), Conduit of Ice, Sudden Storm and Shield/Icy Terrain (the second actually worked better, to my surprise). That made the fight go smoother, but as stated, there was simply not enough damage to take out
the Ruffians before I ran out of stamina and powers to keep them away from me.

As for the companion, I have a Cleric, but she, naturally, goes down in 20-30 seconds because the first thing she does is walk into the nearest red circle and stand there, hitting him for approximately zero damage instead of healing herself or me.

Now, I'm a rather inexperienced player, having played the game for only a bit over a week, so I might be missing something. I was hoping someone would have some advice pertaining to playstyle or power choice that could help. And I am very well I aware that I can just take the fight in a group and win it easily, but that would be avoiding the problem, not solving it.
