Veldryne was born in 1349 DR The Year of the Bridle. His father, was a human druid from the dales, and his mother a moon elf from Cormanthyr. When the elven court retreated to Evermeet, Veldryne’s parents chose to relocate to the hidden elven city of Evereska.
In 1358 DR The Year of Shadows, Vel’dryne’s parents were slain by a healing spell gone awry as his father attempted to help a Tomb Guard patrol that had been injured investigating rogue magic that had been tearing through the nearby desert.
Now orphaned, Vel’dryne was raised as a ward of the city, and the temple of Sehanine Moonbow. Being raised as such he holds the entire Seldarine in great reverence. At the age of sixteen, he was granted provisional admittance to the College of Magic and Arms, having shown an aptitude for arcane magic both innate and learned.
Vel’dryne’s youth, human curiosity and devotion to his studies allowed him to graduate in 1368 DR, and he was admitted to the Tomb Guard, and exception being made for his mixed heritage, similar to his father’s exception for being a druid.
During the war with the phaerrim in 1372 DR, Vel’dryne was one of the few of the Tomb Guard to survive, and one of even fewer mages from the city to survive. The loss of many comrades during the war affected him deeply, in the aftermath of the phaerrim war he grew more serious and reserved. Working tirelessly to help rebuild the city, and train new tomb guards. Despite his incredibly young age he became an arcane combat instructor at the College of Magic and Arms, his frontline experiences in the war, coupled with his innate arcane skills granted him insight into ways to improvise and adapt spells on the battlefield. A skill extremely valuable to a spellcaster’s survival, especially with the Tomb Guard’s depleted numbers.
In 1374 DR Vel’dryne joined in the defense of Evereska against Sarya Dlardrageth’s Daemonfaey army. Along with the Vale Guard, he joined Severil Mirithar’s crusade to supplement the arcane spellcasters lost in the battle.
Over that summer, he took part in many battles in support of the crusade, fighting alongside dalesmen and the elven crusade against the Zhentarim. Later, he served as an elven liason to Lord Selkirk’s Silver Raven mercenary company, and the army from Sembia, whom Mirithar’s daughter had convinced to join in an alliance to rid Myth Drannor of the remaining daemonfae army.
During the battle in the Vale of Lost Voices, he was injured by one of the vrock demons that was bound to Dlardrageth service. A gash from the vrock’s claw left an eight inch scar through his right brow, down to his jawline and the demons poisons rendered him blind in both eyes.
Due to his injuries, he did not take part in the final clearing of Myth Drannor. In the aftermath of the battles, he learned to work with his sightlessness, and focused more on studies to further his innate spellcasting abilities, teaching classes in Myth Drannor’s arcane academies, making sure that the wizards trained in Myth Drannor were familiar with other spellcasting traditions.
When not actively teaching, Vel’Dryne became fast friends with Myth’Drannor’s high mage Aeriven Teshurr, often discussing arcane lore, traditions, and theories on both portalcraft and mythalcraft. As he was a half elf, and after the high mage’s transformation during the war, both were a sort outcast to the remaining elves in the resurgent elven stronghold.
In 1385 DR Toril was struck by the Spellplague, resulting from the assassination of Mystra by the mad god Cyric. Magic across the Realms ran rampant without Mystra’s guiding hand on the weave.
When the wave of blue fire hit Myth Drannor, Vel’dryne attempted to shield the Tree of Souls that anchored Myth Drannor’s rebuilt mythal with his own spells and his body. In turn, the tree seems to have shielded him as well. Vel’dryne was spellscarred, but rather than having an adverse effect, his eyes were spellscarred and his sight was restored, however in a monochrome form similar to a drow’s darkvision.
In the two decades immediately following the spellplague he was amongst the first spellcasters to adapt to the warped and broken remnants of Mystra’s weave. His spellscarred eyes allowing him to see the torn strands of magic in unique ways.
In 1423 DR, after spending the previous two decades as interim archmage of Myth Drannor, he set out to travel Faerun to take stock in the changed world. His goal was to evaluate how the changed political and magical landscape might affect Myth Drannor. He also hoped in his travels to come across some sign as to the fate of Aerivan Teshurr,
Starting with a return to Evereska, he spent a decade studying the effects of the city’s mythal caused by the spellplague, and comparing them to the effects on Myth Drannor’s own mythal. The magical energy field surrounding Evereska was unique in that, it was repaired in 1372 during the Phaerrim war, but the elven sorcerer who aided the hill elders in its repair was a wielder of the shadow weave. Essentially creating one of the first works of whole magic in more than five millennia.
He continued his studies in the Silver Marches, alternating his time between Silverymoon, Mithril Hall, and Mirabar for decades. His time in he silver marches was his first real foray into a society not made up primarily of elves. While it is true that Myth Drannor was a very open city to other races, it was still a decidedly elven city. Vel’dryne found immersion in a mixed culture like Silverymoon, and the dwarven cultures of Mirabar and Mithril Hall fascinating.
Rather than staying in place in any of the cities, he spent as much time as he could travelling with the patrols and lending what aid he could, managing to keep his combative skills sharp, and gain a greater understanding of the area at large.
In 1474 DR it was on one such patrol that Vel’Dryne and his companions witnessed the explosion of Mount Hotenow, despite being several days ride away. After witnessing the events, his company rode back to Mirabar as quickly as they could to report what they had seen.
Ritual scrying of the City of Neverwinter showed the great devastation wrought by the volcanic eruption. The Axe of Mirabar sent a relief force of one hundred dwarves overland to help look for any surivors. While Vel’Dryne travelled with a guide through underground tunnels back to Mithril Hall, and then on to Silverymoon, in an attempt to muster a larger relief force. Once the force was gathered, it made its way to the beleaguered city.
Vel’dryne has remained in Neverwinter since, doing what he can to aid in the rebuilding, and strengthening the defenses of the city. He hopes to return to Myth Drannor or Evereska to live out his final days in relative peace, but with so much work still needing to be done in Neverwinter, he doesn’t see it likely that he will be able to return anytime soon. It is a fate he has resigned himself to, and sees the work he does in the north as needed, and for now, that is enough.
